Lee meets Ginger and takes up the Mekko Dean disappearance case
Elsewhere, Ethan Hawke's Lee Raybon is honoured with the Citizen Journalist of the Year award. He then rants about the sellouts in the audience when he gives his acceptance speech. He also shares some things about his father and ultimately breaks the award he was given a few minutes ago. However, his daughter, Francis, is not too elated about his behaviour.

Elsewhere at the bar, Lee meets a public defender, Ginger (played by Betty Gilpin). Ginger tells Lee that she doubts that two men are following her. However, she does not share with Lee what the suspects look like. Lee soon finds out that Ginger is indeed followed by two men who offer him a candy in the bathroom. Lee observes that one of them has a Nazi tattoo. However, he is still unaware as to why these men are following the public defender. Later, Lee gets beaten up by the writers whom he called sellouts during his awards acceptance speech.
The next day, Lee visits Ginger's office to help her as a friend and find out why she is being stalked. Initially, she hesitates to provide information. But Lee learns that Ginger had a former client, Mekko Dean, whom she is unable to reach. He is currently in prison. Lee offers to help Ginger and visits the prison to meet Mekko.
In prison, he is presented with a man who pretends to be Mekko. However, he puts up an act because he has never met Mekko.
Later, Cyrus mocks Lee for mentioning Ginger's name to the Rupidoop (the fake inmate used to fool outsiders). Lee then notices a prison guard named McMann, who turns out to be the same man who had been following Ginger the previous day. Lee then visits Ginger's place, and as he is about to leave, he hears gunshots. According to Comic Basics, Lee finds a masked man bleeding and escaping. Ginger has shot him.
The Lowdown Season 2 Episode 2 recap: McMann shoots Chili as Lee's investigation takes a deadly turn

According to TV Obsessive, Episode 2 of The Lowdown Season 2 begins with Lee Raybon Sr. sitting at his son's bookshop, eating beans. Lee adds that his father, Lee Sr. is a grifter who has remained estranged for 17 years. Lee makes it clear that he doesn't want to be like his father. He is furious at his staff for feeding the man.
The viewers also come to know that Lee Sr. made his son help with baseball card scams, pyramid schemes, and the like. Later, Lee Sr. reveals that he came to visit after he read an article about Lee receiving an award and that he has a daughter.
Lee is not willing to share his daughter's information with Lee Sr. Later in the episode, when Lee Sr. meets Francis and introduces himself as her granddad, she tells him her granddad is dead. Lee might have lied to his daughter about her grandfather.
Elsewhere, Ginger appoints a man with a long rap sheet named Pookie to help her find out what happened to Mekko. Even though Pookie isn't her client, he agrees to contact her after he finds out about Mekko. Ginger tries to brush off Lee.
Lee doesn't seem to back off from his investigation. He buys a prison guard calendar which features McMann posing with a gun. He learns that the guards hang out at a shady bar called Secrets. He visits the bar and meets Chili after a bartender tells him that Chili was fired a few weeks ago.
Lee speaks to Chili, pretending to be someone who is interested in taking up a job as a guard. He agrees to go to Chili's house for some cheeseburgers. At home, Chili starts dancing on Hank Williams Jr.'s Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound holding his shotgun as a microphone. When he is on the verge of giving information to Lee, Lee tells him about his work as a journalist. The situation turns ugly as Chili decides to take Lee to McMann to win over the prison guard.
McMann chases Lee and shouts at him, asking where Mekko is. McMann shoots Chili in the head.
