The only Marshals Season 1 recap you need before the next chapter

CBS's neo-Western drama series, Marshals, is gearing up for its second season. Created by Spencer Hudnut, Season 2 is set to premiere on October 4, 2026.

A spin-off of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone series, Marshals follows the story of a former US Navy SEAL and rancher, Kayce Dutton. After his wife's death, Kayce joins a specialized group of US Marshals who are tasked to protect Montana. The series opens with Kayce and his son, Tate, residing in Yellowstone East Camp after they sold the rest of the Dutton Ranch to Broken Rock Indian Reservation. According to Entertainment Weekly, Kayce not only lost his wife, Monica, but also his old friend Garrett in a fire that broke out at East Camp.

Throughout Season 1, Kayce works with the US Marshals, and it gives him a sense of purpose. He builds a good rapport with his fellow Marshals, Belle, Cal, Miles, and Cruz. At the end of Marshals Season 1, the wealthy rancher and schemer Tom Weaver is exposed as the mastermind behind the attack on the Broken Rock Reservation.

Marshals Season 1 recap: Kayce does not sell East Camp

Kayce has spent most of the season wondering whether to live at East Camp or not. According to Entertainment Weekly, he rejects Tom Weaver's offer to buy the land. Garrett's death in the fire makes Kayce rethink his decision.

In the finale, Weaver arrives with his daughter Dolly and ranch foreman Jeb. Weaver again makes a formal offer. However, by then Kayce has made up his mind not to sell East Camp. He tells him how the Dutton family has owned the land for almost 150 years. He explains that there have been unfortunate accidents, such as the barn fire that killed Garrett, or tragic events, such as Monica's death, but he believes that one day things will get better. He firmly tells Weaver,

"My life has been defined by losing the things I love. East Camp's one thing I can hold onto."

Weaver seems disappointed with Kayce's decision and leaves. Kayce tells his teammates that he plans to honor Garrett's love for horses by turning the ranch into an equine therapy centre.

Tate also appreciates his father's decision.

Tate saves Thomas Rainwater

Throughout Season 1, someone desperately wanted to kill Thomas Rainwater, the chairman of the Confederated Tribes of Broken Rock. He knew the toxic waste pushed into the reservation could cause harm to the land and its people. He has fought hard to stop it. In the finale, he heads to a meeting with a senator. However, mid-way, his car is attacked by unknown armed men. They barely escape the attack, and Kayce helps them to hide at East Camp.

However, someone tips off the armed men, and they launch an attack on the ranch. Kayce and the Marshals bravely fight the hitmen, and Rainwater gets cornered in a bedroom. However, Tate shoots the hitmen and saves Rainwater.

Later, the team finds out that the hitmen were hired by someone to assassinate Rainwater. They initially think it's Nathan Irons, a Broken Rock council member who had a beef with Rainwater. However, the Marshals later find that Nathan has apparently killed himself.

Belle and Cal's fate

Rainwater is successful in suspending the mining activities. The officials ordered a full review that might lead to a shutdown in the future.

However, the situation turns complex when Irons' autopsy reports are out. It shows that Irons has defensive wounds and almost no powder burns on his hands, which suggests that his death might not be a suicide.

The Marshals start to investigate. They find video footage of an East Camp ranch hand calling someone before the attack. When Belle and Cal visit the hand's home, they find his lifeless body. Outside the house, they see Jeb, the Weavers' ranch foreman, driving away. After he escapes, two hitmen open fire on Belle and Cal.

At the end of Season 1, Tom and Dolly visit East Camp to meet Kayce and his son, Tate. Tom offers to take Tate to Texas for bass fishing. Even though Kayce is skeptical in the beginning, he agrees. Later, the viewers see Tom and Tate board a private jet. Soon, Jeb arrives and tells Tom,

"It's handled, sir."

Meanwhile, at East Camp, Kayce and Dolly spend some time together riding horses. Kayce is unaware of Tom's evil plans, and now that Tate is with Tom, things can turn brutal in Season 2. The ending leaves the viewers with several questions. Is Dolly aware of Tom's plans? What happened to Cal and Belle? Will Cruz leave Montana and take up the job in Washington? Will Tom kill Tate?

Season 1 is available to stream on Paramount+. Season 2 will release on October 4, 2026, at 8:30 PM ET on CBS. The remaining episodes will drop weekly on Sundays at 8:00 PM ET on CBS. Viewers can also choose to stream it on Paramount.
