The only NCIS: Origins Season 2 recap you need before the next chapter

Season 3 of NCIS: Origins is all set to arrive in October 2026, and since there were a lot of storylines left incomplete in Season 2, the new chapter will cover them all. One of the biggest plots is the relationship between young Gibbs and Lala Dominguez.

While the two are growing closer, things also become complicated between them because of Lala's connection with Manny and her recovery from the serious car accident that occurred in the Season 1 finale. At the same time, there are changes in Gibbs' personal life too.

He suddenly married Diane in Las Vegas after they broke up and got back together. However, they later separated, but they are still legally married because their divorce is not finished.

Franks is still dealing with family problems involving his brother Mason and the Pruitt compound story. As for the team, they have a lot of cases to work on, as threats from the inside are also affecting the office. Randy's kidnapping is another key plot of NCIS: Origins, as showrunner David J. North explained (via TVLine):

"He's in a dark dungeon somewhere killing them with kindness."

The showrunner made it clear that he doesn't want to give any spoilers, but he confirmed that Randy did not get kidnapped randomly. He found something that was important and dangerous at the same time, and fans should wait for Season 3 to find out the actual reason.

NCIS: Origins Season 2 recap: The case and fight to save the NIS office

The NCIS: Origins Season 2 finale features the group in a perilous encounter with Abe Pruitt and his allies. Ultimately, a case involving the death of youngsters in a warehouse leads much of the investigation back to Pruitt.

The situation takes a dangerous turn as Pruitt’s gang takes people hostage, including Mason, Franks’s brother. With the assistance of the FBI, the team takes action to secure the compound.

During the confrontation, Gibbs puts himself in the line of fire while trying to save Mason, sustaining bullet injuries while doing so. In the end, the operation is completed successfully, and Pruitt is arrested.

However, just around this time, a scandal endangers the Camp Pendleton NIS office, which may be shut down as a consequence. This would mean that the group will have to split, and the fates of some of the characters are left unclear.

Eventually, the team comes up with a brilliant proposal. Wheeler offers to rebrand the NIS as NCIS, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and present the move as a way to improve the agency’s image. The idea is accepted, and the office is saved, and this is also the moment when viewers get to know how NIS became NCIS.

Gibbs and Lala finally make a choice in NCIS: Origins Season 2 finale

With the office saved, Lala still considers leaving NIS for a sheriff's position in the California town where Manny has been placed under WITSEC protection. She appears ready for a different, quieter life away from the team.

Meanwhile, Gibbs is ready to finally express his feelings. Wearing a new NCIS team jacket, he shows up at Lala's house looking for her. When Lala comes out, she tells him that she planned to leave but couldn't find the courage to do it.

She admits that her only wish was for Gibbs to ask her to stay. Gibbs does just that, and they end up sharing their first kiss and the expected "Hollywood ending," although the voice-over of an older Gibbs at the end of the episode reminds the audience not to take things too lightly.

But NCIS: Origins does not end there. Randy is kidnapped while working on digitizing NIS records and evidence logs. As explained earlier, he had apparently discovered information he was not meant to find.
