NCIS Season 24 is fast approaching, and before you start the new chapter, make sure to revisit everything that happened before. Especially how Season 23 concluded and how it made way for the story to continue.
Season 23 ended with two very different family stories: one that brings emotional closure and another that leaves viewers with a scary unanswered question. The finale, Sons and Daughters, finds Kayla Vance revisiting the bombing that has haunted her for a year.
On the other side, McGee faces an unexpected crisis involving his son, Mateo. Since Season 24 is on the way, these plots are worth keeping in mind as the finale doesn't resolve everything before the credits roll.
Kayla's investigation becomes important as it also sheds light on her late father, Director Leon Vance. She is given a chance to decide what's next for her career. As for Torres, he ends up in a dangerous situation because of Mateo's suspicious behavior.

NCIS Season 23 recap: Kayla Vance uncovers the truth about her father's legacy
NCIS Season 23 goes back to the explosion event in the coffee shop from which Kayla managed to escape the year before. Later on, when another teenage boy, Ryan Wallace, dies in a backpack explosion, the agents find out that the explosions are somehow connected, and Kayla's investigation grows in significance.
As explained by TVBrittanyF.com, their search takes them to a community called Archive where boys discuss their frustrations and disappointments. Also, they find a writer, Isaac Wren, whose book looks like an inspiration for extremists. Soon, it's revealed that Wren, the man who criticized corporate power, actually profited from the stock operations related to the bombings.
The case becomes personal when LaRoche finds out that Kayla's research has been funded with questionable money that once belonged to her father. According to the evidence, Vance was not involved with the money, but was trying to reveal its criminal origin instead.
Things turn around when Hank Hammersmith, the father of a former bomber, tries to kill Wren in revenge. Kayla convinces him not to attack, and the team arrests Wren.
But more importantly, Kayla finds a note and a discharge form left by her dad in her old gym locker. His message is clear: he wants her to pick her future, whether that means staying at NCIS or going out on her own.
NCIS Season 23 recap: McGee's son Mateo turns the finale into a mystery
As Kayla seeks answers about her father, McGee is put into a position he could never have imagined. His 18-year-old son, Mateo Garcia, comes to NCIS and first says he’s interested in an internship, then changes his mind and says it’s not for him.
Torres grows suspicious when he learns that Mateo had used a workstation but never submitted the application that he had planned to fill out. Further investigation shows that Mateo accessed NCIS servers under false pretences.
Mateo is clearly nervous and armed when Torres confronts him in the alley. He tells Torres to leave, implying there's someone watching them, but without any clear explanation.
The standoff escalates when both men are armed. The screen goes black, and a gunshot rings out. As explained by Popverse, viewers aren’t given confirmation of who fired or who was injured.
What to expect when NCIS returns for Season 24
The first question coming into NCIS Season 24 is the Mateo and Torres confrontation. It’s likely the premiere, Wayward Son, will address the shooting, the aftermath, and what Mateo was really doing inside NCIS systems.
The situation hits especially close to home for McGee, who is still forging a relationship with a son he only learned he had earlier this season. Whatever had happened in the alley could make trust between them much harder to build.
Torres may also clash with McGee, especially if the two have a different view of Mateo’s actions or the fight itself. Meanwhile, Kayla’s storyline arrives at a more settled place.
She has confronted the truth about her investigation, has learned more clearly what her father had in mind, and he has encouraged her to make her own decisions. But NCIS does not have a permanent Director yet, and LaRoche is still interested in the position.
Michael Weatherly is returning as Tony DiNozzo for a story arc that will run the whole season, and the new season is about to bring another major change. For now, the biggest unfinished business is Mateo: the finale leaves his family, his colleagues, and the audience waiting for answers.
