Actor Michael Landon from the classic Little House on the Prairie series made Charles Ingalls one of television's most beloved father figures, bringing warmth, resilience, and quiet strength to the iconic role from Laura Ingalls Wilder's eponymous children's books. Decades later, Netflix has rebooted the beloved frontier drama, with Australian actor Luke Bracey stepping into Landon's legendary boots as the new Charles Ingalls.

While Netflix's Little House on the Prairie draws inspiration directly from Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic books, it also aims to introduce Charles Ingalls to modern audiences without losing the compassion, determination, and pioneering spirit that defined him. The reboot follows the Ingalls family as they leave Wisconsin to build a new life on the Kansas frontier, facing unforgiving landscapes.

While Luke Bracey faced the challenge of honoring a television icon, he eventually made the role his own, introducing a new generation to the warmth of Charles Ingalls.

Here's a closer look at Luke Bracey's casting in Little House on the Prairie.

For Australian actor Luke Bracey, getting into Pa's shoes for Netflix's Little House on the Prairie was a little tough, mainly because the actor had never read the books or seen the classic TV series. While countless fans grew up imagining their own Little House, Bracey was alien to the concept, which meant creating a Charles Ingalls from scratch.

While Luke Bracey was unaware of Charles Ingalls' game, countless Little House fans had literally grown up with America's most beloved dad, which is why it was important to create a character who felt innately human and also paid homage to the original patriarch from Wilder's books.

Charles Ingalls not only set the gold standard for 'girl dad' for a whole generation but also showed that sometimes, the simplest characters resonate with the audience the best. Netflix's Little House on the Prairie Season 1 follows Luke Bracey's Charles as he moves to the frontier with his family, builds a home with his own two bare hands, and develops a heartwarming relationship with his neighbors.

One might wonder how Luke Bracey was cast as Charles Ingalls, despite having no knowledge about Wilder's books. In an interview with Netflix Tudum, showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine and executive producer Joy Gorman Wettels revealed that Bracey's performance carried warmth, strength, kindness, and tenderness, all the qualities they were looking for in their Charles in Netflix's Little House on the Prairie:

“He has a real ease with all sorts of different people — with men, with women, with enemies, with friends. That quality in his performance — having warmth, strength, kindness, and tenderness, and yet you wouldn’t want to mess with him — came through from the moment we saw him.”

Luke Bracey nailed the characterization and felt at ease in Pa's boots. The production equipped Bracey with two of the most important things needed for his transformation into Charles: a sturdy pair of boots and a fiddle. Bracey was comfortable in Pa's clothes and boots, but learning the fiddle was hard. The actor ultimately abandoned learning to play the fiddle and focused instead on convincingly portraying someone who could. And Voila! Little House on the Prairie found its Charles Ingalls.
