Fans of political thriller TV series are eagerly waiting for Collins' return in Paradise Season 2, which is now just a month away. The first Season on Hulu began with introducing a community of influential people, living in a seemingly calm and composed environment.

At the heart of the story is Xavier Collins (played by Sterling K. Brown), who is a secret agent tasked with protecting President Cal Bradford. Initially, it looked like a political mystery after the president was killed.

But the biggest twist arrives when it's revealed that these influential people or the community isn't on the surface at all. In reality, they are living inside a massive underground city in Colorado.

Around 25,000 survivors moved inside this hidden complex after a catastrophic event wiped out life above ground three years earlier. And this refuge is known as "Paradise", where you find everything: from advanced technology to renewable food production.

Curious to know what happens when the President is killed and Collins becomes the key figure in the story? A detailed recap of Season 1 is right below.

The first season of Paradise opens as a straightforward political thriller about the assassination of President Cal Bradford and the assignment of his Secret Service agent Xavier Collins. However, the series very quickly demystifies itself.

By the end of the very first episode, viewers will understand the world in which these characters live is an underground bunker that was created long before the Great Collapse (when civilization was destroyed as a result of an extinction-level catastrophic event) and that this place is the only oasis left for humanity after that event.

With the setting revealed, the assassination of Bradford gains a much broader significance. It does not just occur in the office of the president, but rather, within the walls of one of the last surviving refuges for humans.

And it is from this location that Xavier (who took a bullet for Bradford at an earlier assassination attempt) will begin his quest to find out what truly happened to the man who was once the object of his protection.

Flashbacks in Season 1 also reveal a lot about their bond. At the same time, there are questions about who created this place and who actually has full control or access to it.

Paradise Season 1 recap: The truth behind Bradford's death and the bunker's history

In the final episode of the series, there is a significant shift in the investigation, where the key to solving it comes from an unexpected person: Trent. Twelve years earlier, Trent had managed the construction of the Paradise facility and was the one responsible for discovering the presence of a hazardous material on the construction site.

He also knew the fact that it was causing the workers on site to develop severe illnesses. In his attempts to make this known to the public, he was taken off the Paradise project. Feeling that it was his duty to do something to prevent this tragedy, he went to the press and attempted to expose what he believed to be a preventable disaster.

Unfortunately, no one was cautious enough to listen. In his desperation, he went so far as to attempt to assassinate Bradford at a press conference. However, his actions were wasted when Xavier stepped in and blocked the bullet.

When the world came to an end and society fell apart years later, Trent escaped from prison during the upheaval. In order to get to the safety of the bunker, Trent ended up killing both a librarian as well as that librarian's wife, stealing their identity and using their documents to gain entry to the bunker.

Paradise Season 1: The reason why Trent killed Bradford explained

Trent admitted that he calmed down inside the bunker, but things changed when he saw Bradford in the library creating a mixtape for his kid. It was at this moment that all his anger came back, forcing Trent to take revenge.

He thought of all the lives lost while constructing Paradise, and then came a President like Bradford, who had no sympathy or kindness towards people. So, Trente ended up killing him.

Trent attempted to escape after telling Xavier the truth, but was ultimately unsuccessful. When Xavier and Robinson discovered him, he yelled out one last comment regarding the bunker before leaping down from the rafters into the artificial sky, resulting in his own death.

Xavier uncovers another key clue when he remembers that Bradford always wrote the numbers 812092 on his cigarette packs. He eventually realizes this number isn’t random.

It matches a Dewey Decimal code in the bunker’s library. When he follows it, he finds two books: one about Frank Sinatra and another called The Man Who Kept the Secrets. Inside the second book, Bradford hid confidential files explaining what really caused the world to collapse.

These papers also show that people might still be alive outside Paradise and include notes linked to the same number pattern, even the date Bradford became President.

By the end of Paradise Season 1, Sinatra's crimes are all out. She isn't just another powerful figure inside the bunker, but is also behind sinister events like orchestrating Billy's murder.

Sinatra's power has been diminished when Jane shoots her and leaves her hospitalized. Jane was instructed to find Xavier's daughter, Presley. However, after Elizabeth was fired for a trivial issue regarding the President's old Wii console, her mental state deteriorated, resulting in her sending Xavier a disturbing note.

It looked like Presley was no more, but the daughter turns out to be safe. When Bradford’s secrets finally come to light, Xavier decides he can’t stay underground anymore. He gets into a small aircraft, unlocks the bunker doors that have been shut for years, and takes off with Bradford’s notebook and a new sense of purpose.
