HBO's new docuseries The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story revisited the 1985 murder case of the owner of a pet cemetery named Dorothy Lou Thompson. The series explored accounts from Dorothy's family members, journalists, and investigators. The case was one of the most lasting murder mysteries in St. Bernard Parish.

The series revealed that the cemetery had long been believed to carry a curse and to conceal hidden secrets. The mystery, which stayed unsolved for many years, was revisited when a witness shared a disturbing account about witnessing Dorothy's ghost.

In 2014, SBSO News reported that the 61-year-old woman disappeared in mid-April 1985, only a few days before she was scheduled to appear in court in Chalmette for a lawsuit over the ownership of her property. On May 2, 1985, her partly unclothed body was discovered in the Mississippi River along the east bank of Plaquemines Parish.

The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story premiered today exclusively on HBO Max. The series showed the shocking disappearance and murder of the owner of a pet cemetery, Dorothy Lou Thompson, in the Mississippi River along the east bank of Plaquemines Parish. She was found in an unclothed state by a fisherman on May 2, 1985, tied with steel chains, and a plastic bag fastened with wire around her head.

Brandon Nodier, who was employed as Dorothy's groundskeeper, became the prime suspect in the murder case. Fox 8 News reported that the investigators believed Brandon attempted to deceive Dorothy. Chief of Detectives Colonel John Doran explained that the motive was his strong wish to take possession of Dorothy's land. However, the evidence at that time was not sufficient to arrest him.

The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story revealed the real killer of Dorothy

The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story revealed that a major turning point came when an unidentified witness stepped forward and claimed Brandon to be the killer of Dorothy. In April 2012, Brandon was arrested for killing the 61-year-old woman. In 2014, he entered a guilty plea to manslaughter under a plea agreement. At the age of 60, he received a 10-year prison sentence, which was formally accepted by a State District Judge named Perry Nicosia.

Chief of Detectives Colonel John Doran revealed to Fox 8 that Brandon and his wife had apparently devised a plan to force Dorothy off her 14 acres of land in the Toca community, located in the eastern end of the parish. They pressured her into what investigators believed was a fraudulent sale. Col. Doran said,

"The motive was his strong desire to possess Dorothy Thompson's land."

When Dorothy realized what had happened, she immediately filed a lawsuit against Brandon's family to reclaim her property. Ten days before the trial was set to begin, she went missing. The case was scheduled for a court motion when she was murdered, and after her death, Dorothy's heir eventually won the lawsuit.
