The Pitt has no intention of changing its winning formula anytime soon. As HBO's medical drama heads into its third season, star Shawn Hatosy (who plays Dr. Jack Abbott) has opened up about the unusual format that has helped set the series apart from other shows in the genre and why its “special sauce” still works.

The Pitt Season 3, scheduled to return on HBO in January 2027, might be shifting its story to November 12, a day after Veterans Day, but it's not trading its single-shift format in the future.

Unlike conventional medical dramas that jump between cases, locations, and timelines, the Noah Wyle-led drama keeps viewers locked inside the emergency department, unfolding a single shift in near real time. Each season chronicles the intense events of one 15-hour shift, allowing even the smallest moments to carry immediate consequences.

Shawn Hatosy reveals that The Pitt will not change its winning formula anytime soon

Fans wanting a peek at the lives of The Pitt characters after their brutal 15-hour shift in the eponymous ED might be in for disappointment. In his recent appearance on The Playlist's Bingeworthy Podcast, Shawn Hatosy revealed that HBO's breakout medical drama is keen to preserve its winning formula in Season 3 (and potentially in future seasons), meaning it will continue to explore its characters' lives during the harrowing 15-hour shift in the ED. This is what Hatosy said about the show's 'special sauce':

'The special sauce of the show is that 15-hour, minute-to-minute thing where we’re just there, and everything that happens off shift is what feeds these characters.''

While the format of a single 15-hour shift per season has worked for The Pitt so far, fans look forward to exploring the characters' personal lives. The sophomore season even delivered some breadcrumbs, namely Dr. Mel and Dr. Santos' karaoke team-up, the day shift getting together to watch the fireworks, and Huckleberry getting together with Amy, a first-time mother whose husband sadly passed away from severe burns in season 1. These teases were not only hits among fans but also led to a string of fan theories and edits, which Hatosy believes is ''exciting':

''People are making fan fiction about what’s happening between the shifts, which is exciting. It’s turned into this whole thing, and I support that. If people are talking about it, that means it’s working.''

Exploring the cast and plot shake-ups in The Pitt Season 3

While The Pitt will not change its format in Season 3, major cast shake-ups will increase the stakes. It is no secret that Supriya Ganesh's Dr. Samira Mohan will follow in the footsteps of Tracy Ifeachor's Dr. Heather Collins and exit the show in the upcoming season. Additionally, Shabana Azeez's Victoria Javadi will move to the psychiatry rotation in The Pitt Season 3, hinting that the show could include more cases with the psychiatry department, which could further extend to Dr. Robby's healing journey.

Season 3 has plenty of new faces who will be introduced in the ED, namely Pruitt Taylor Vince, Malachi Beasley, Cheyenne Perez, Jeremy Radin, Charlz Williams, and Rosanny Zayas. Additionally, Stephen Chang, Barry Clifton, Chris Diamantopoulos, Lawrence Kao, Brent Sexton, JB Tadena and Hannah Ware have joined the upcoming season as recurring guest stars.

A huge departure from the Fourth of July setting, The Pitt Season 3 is set in November, which means the ED will be swamped with cases related to frostbite, heater accidents, and other winter-related accidents.

In an interview with Deadline, Wyle teased that the winter setting will allow the characters to explore a host of new emergencies:

“Weather is a factor in Pennsylvania, certainly in Pittsburgh. You sort of turn the corner into fall, and those temperatures drop. All sorts of different kinds of cases come through the doors when you’ve got slick roads: people turning on their boilers and their heaters for the first time, house fires, the homeless situation where people are out on the street and cold. The weather is a character this season, for sure.”
