From the beginning of the series, Tim and Lucy’s dynamic has been growing. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Eric Winter opens up about the alternate ending of Season 8.

The Rookie Season 8 ended with Lucy saying yes to Tim’s proposal. However, things take a turn when, right after this happy moment, the two of them are injected with tranquilizers, which causes them to lose consciousness. They are then kidnapped, setting the stage for the upcoming season. Before they lose consciousness, the kidnappers tell them that Heath Everett has sent them, adding to the complexity of the storyline.

However, Eric Winter, in an interview with PEOPLE, notes that The Rookie Season 8 almost did not have this ending, as they also filmed an alternate ending. The reason an alternate ending was filmed was because of the uncertainty of whether this series would continue or not. He adds that they did not know whether they would come back for another season after the filming for Season 8 ended.

Hence, they filmed an alternate ending, which is “different” from the one the viewers see at the end of Season 8. With many long-term TV shows getting cancelled in recent years, the possibility for The Rookie to also get cancelled also arose. This alternate ending came as a preparation if they did not get the chance to return for another season. Eric Winter also added that after the news about the renewal of the series arrived, the whole cast was "thrilled."

Though the aspect of having an alternate ending to The Rookie Season 8 is intriguing, the actor did not reveal the details of the storyline as it might be a “spoiler”. He also added that he is “very happy” to get the chance to return to the series for Season 9. The ending of Season 8 created immense intrigue regarding the situation of Tim and Lucy. The first step they were able to take towards a happy ending quickly became a complicated one with their kidnapping.

Besides Lucy and Tim’s storyline, Dash’s situation also added to the intrigue. Dash was able to help Nolan by submitting the recommendation. However, in the end, Dash made the decision to take a gap year so that he could focus on filming. The cast members do a remarkable job in bringing life to the respective characters. The manner in which Eric Winter delivers a heartwarming performance as Tim Bradford at the end of Season 8 resonates deeply with the viewers.

Throughout the series, Tim has gone through many ups and downs. These aspects have also contributed to the growth of his character. Similarly, Melissa O’Neil’s performance as Lucy Chen is also a significant propelling factor in the storyline. Some of the other cast members of The Rookie are Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. After getting renewed for the new season at the beginning of this year, creator Alexei Hawley also revealed that filming for the new season has started. It must be noted that the upcoming season of the series will not have the same number of episodes as the previous seasons.
