The Shards cast open up about going back to the '80s, the American Gigolo influence and more

As the premiere of The Shards gets closer, the cast have opened up about recreating the '80s vibes for their upcoming FX series.

Created by two-time BAFTA winner Ryan Murphy, famous for American Horror Story, Pose and The Prom, the series stars Igby Rigney as Bret Easton Ellis, Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, Graham Campbell as Thom Wright, Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds, and Hayes Warner as Debbie Schaffer.

Just a day before its premiere, the cast sat down with ABC News to talk about what it was like bringing The Shards to life. During the interview, the cast was asked what it was like bringing a story set in the 1980s to life, especially since none of them grew up during that era.

Answering the question, Gere said the clothes and hairstyles made it feel like they had gone back in time. Gerber added that working on the series made her feel she had experienced the 1980s herself, adding that she liked how people spent less time on the phone.

Talking about what it was like filming the series, Campbell said it felt like characters were dealing with the usual ups and downs of high school while a much darker mystery takes place around them.

Gere added that it almost felt like they were shooting two different shows at once, with one side focusing on teenage friendships and parties and the other leaning into dark, horror-like moments, calling it "real Ryan Murphy American Horror Story."

When asked about the tension between Rigney's character and Homer's in the series, Rigney said those scenes were some of his "favorite" to film because it felt like they were going back and forth with each other. Homer added that they both enjoyed trying to make each other as "uncomfortable as possible," which made those moments even more fun to shoot.

The interview also touched on another interesting connection. The Shards is inspired by American Gigolo, directed by Paul Schrader, which makes Homer's role even more special as his father, Richard Gere, starred in the film alongside Lauren Hutton.

When asked if his father, Richard Gere, had helped him prepare for the role in the FX series, Homer said his father's advice was mostly about carrying himself on set and learning how to make the job work for him.

Where to watch The Shards?

The Shards is scheduled to premiere on August 5 at 9 p.m. ET on Hulu. For international viewers who are interested in watching the series, they can stream it on August 6 on Disney+.

The series is expected to have a total of ten episodes. However, instead of releasing all the episodes at once, it will run on a weekly release schedule, with two episodes dropping together on selected weeks.

The story follows a group of friends coming from an elite background studying in a school. However, their lives take a turn after a new student, Robert Mallory, gets transferred to their school. Along with an 1980s theme, the show will include the teens dealing with love and their own secrets as they deal with a serial killer, "The Trawler," who is behind the teenagers.
