The Shards Episodes 3-4: Trawler's new victim and Robert's party take a horrific turn - recap ahead

The latest episodes of The Shards, FX's teen thriller based on Bret Easton Ellis' eponymous semi-autobiographical novel, continued the unfolding drama in Buckley prep school, as Trawler took another victim.

While Bret and his friend group were dealing with Matt's disappearance, The Shards Episode 3 revealed a new classmate, Rhonda, who became Trawler's latest victim. Nicknamed Really Rhonda, she arrived at Buckley after her family paid heavily to keep her out of a special needs school, due to her undiagnosed Tourette’s.

While Bret was determined that the Trawler's recent activities were connected to Robert's arrival, his friend group was adamant about throwing him a party at Susan's house. Episode 4 titled 'Robert's Party' was dedicated entirely to him, which took a disastrous turn after Debbie was ambushed by an intruder and Bret learnt a shocking truth about Robert's mother's death.

The Shards Episode 3 recap: Bret followed Robert to his aunt's house

Bret lamented that the school and his friend group have forgotten about Matt's disappearance in The Shards Episode 3. While Bret still suspected Robert and kept close tabs on him, Debbie and the friend group found the perfect event to distract them from the ongoing murders. Debbie was determined to get into a teen dance show and Thom was already choosing between tuxedos for the Homecoming. While Bret tried to remind them about Matt and Rhonda, Thom dismissed his fears, claiming that no bodies were found. However, Susan and Robert actually put up flyers in school and questioned everybody about Rhonda's recent disappearance, suggesting that Bret had some help.

After another awkward lunch with his girlfriend's father, Bret found himself at Matt's house in The Shards Episode 3. Determined to find clues about his disappearance, Bret went to Matt's pool house but was consumed by guilt and longing for his secret lover after inhaling his scent on his school uniform. Bret's trance was broken when Matt's phone rang and he heard the familiar heavy breathing on the other end and boldly questioned 'Robert' why he was doing this.

The final moments of The Shards Episode 3 saw Bret following Robert's Porsche after school to an unfamiliar house in Benedict Canyon. Another voiceover revealed that the house is one of Robert's aunt's rental properties, which would become a crime scene in the future. Determined to find a clue about Matt and Rhonda, Bret entered the house and reached a dark & creepy basement equipped with a cage, where he discovered a bloody Buckley blazer and a live iguana. A flashback saw the Trawler pulling Rhonda from a similar cage.

The Shards Episode 4 recap: What happened at Robert's party?

The Shards Episode 4 was focused entirely on Susan's party for Robert, which took a disastrous turn. While Bret was already keeping tabs on Robert at the party, his chance encounter with two of his former classmates led to a shocking truth about him. Bret learned that the police believed that Robert's mother's death was not accidental and that he actually pushed her. Thinking he had hit the jackpot, Bret wasted no time in whispering this new information in Robert's ear, which immediately sent him to the bar. As Robert drank alcohol and made his way to the dance floor, his behaviour turned erratic.

Elsewhere, Debbie, who felt ignored by Bret throughout the party, found solace in Ryan's arms and the two ended up in Susan's bed in The Shards Episode 4. While the two were ready to hook up, Debbie realized that she could not cheat on Bret and the duo prepared to leave. However, things took a turn when a long-haired intruder with a giant knife ambushed them.

While Debbie and Ryan tried to bargain with the intruder, Robert's behaviour had gotten more erratic. After breaking a couple of glass bottles, he made his way to the pool and threw himself into the water. However, when he did not resurface, Thom and Susan rescued him. While Susan's mouth-to-mouth managed to resurrect Robert, it did not sit right with Thom and the two were about to fight when Debbie and Ryan's screams suggested there was a more pressing issue inside.

The trio made their way to Susan's bedroom, only to find a topless Debbie and Ryan with the unknown intruder. Thom bravely stood up to the intruder, forcing him out of the house.

The final moments of The Shards Episode 4 offered a chilling peek at Matt and Rhonda, confirming they are alive.
