The Sopranos icons are back together for 9/11 true story in a way no one predicted

Steve Schirripa and Michael Imperioli, the stars from The Sopranos, have reunited once again for a new audio drama. They are both going to star in UnderGround Zero: 9/11 & The Mob. The audio drama series follows how the time following 9/11 was an extremely lucrative period for the mafia in New York.

Schirripa and Imperioli also starred together in Nicky Deuce, and this is their third time working together. Interestingly, they aren't the only The Sopranos stars starring in UnderGround Zero: 9/11 & The Mob.

What is the new audio series starring The Sopranos stars Steve Schirripa and Michael Imperioli about?

Steve Schirripa and Michael Imperioli starred in The Sopranos as Bobby Bacala and Christopher Moltisanti, respectively. Now, as Deadline reports, they have reunited to star in iHeart Podcasts and Thoroughbred Studios' new audio series, UnderGround Zero: 9/11 & The Mob.

Besides them, two other The Sopranos stars, Ray Abruzzo and Arthur Nascarella, who played Carmine Lupertazzi Jr. and Carlo Gervasi, are also starring in the upcoming series. The series is not only based on an important true story but will also bring back some of the most celebrated actors of The Sopranos.

According to Deadline, Jeff Bewkes, the current chairman of Thoroughbred Studios, was the head of HBO who greenlit The Sopranos talked about bringing back the show's cast, saying the following:

“One of the first things I did when I became Head of HBO was to greenlight The Sopranos. It’s a decision I’ve never regretted. Now, 25 years later to tell this important story, it was the perfect opportunity to bring back that amazing cast.”

UnderGround Zero: 9/11 & The Mob follows what was happening within the New York mafia as the city was still reeling from the effects of 9/11. As first responders were trying to rescue the injured and the dead, there was an emergency meeting called near the Brooklyn Bridge.

While New York City and the United States as a whole were in shock and despair, the mafia had decided to take advantage of the situation to make a lot of money. They were successful to a large extent until a police officer who made it his mission to stop them put an end to it all.

The show is written by Stephen Kronish and directed by John Scott Dryden. Executive producers of the show are Michael Imperioli, Jeremy Fox, John Scott Dryden, Howard Stringer, and Jason English. Emma Hearn has produced the series. Thoroughbred Studios, Goldhawk Productions, and iHeartPodcasts are the production companies behind the series.

As Deadline reports, Michael Imperioli talked about the show, saying:

“As a New Yorker who lived through 9/11, this story resonated with me immediately,”

He added:

“UnderGround Zero is rooted in crime and investigation, but ultimately, it’s a story about family, loyalty and survival. I’m excited to step into the role of Lt. Frank Sturiano.”

Adding to what Imperioli said, Schirripa said:

“Like Michael, it was a story I thought I knew, but I didn’t,”

He continued:

“Working again with my former Soprano castmates Ray Abruzzo and Arthur Nascarella is always a pleasure, and being given the opportunity to help bring to light this horrific event was very worthwhile.”

UnderGround Zero: 9/11 & The Mob was released on Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio Podcast, and Spotify on September 1, 2026, where it is available for streaming.
