The Testaments Episode 9, is not only a forward-thrusting moment in the story, it also throws everything into emotional chaos. The series features betrayals, devastating revelations, and wild conflicts all throughout, and in the finale, we see the characters breaking under the weight of Gilead's cruelties.

However, The Testaments Episode 9 titled “Marat Sade” feels so powerful because of the flawless performances from the cast members. Each and every role is acted with acute rawness, intensity, fragility, and in a way that seems things are just about to unravel at the right moment. Nearly every character has a moment that is both memorable and impactful, either in a positive or negative sense.

Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday, and the emotional core of the episode

Most of The Testaments Episode 9 is about the relationship between Agnes and Daisy, played by Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday respectively. Agnes is a delicate character, whose emotions are restrained and constantly torn between truths she uncovers and the rigid ideology of Gilead she has always been compelled to follow. Halliday injects a more defiant and intense spark into Daisy’s character, without appearing as a typical hero, but grounded in fear and desperation.

Their performances combine to form an extremely personal rather than just political experience for the audiences. Despite the mystery and tumult, there is one thing that remains intact as the emotional core: their fragile trust in one another, which is substantially fractured by the end of the episode.

Ann Dowd still rules every room as Aunt Lydia

There are few actors who can build the tension as easily as Ann Dowd. She's the secret weapon of the franchise as Aunt Lydia. The series doesn't really give Lydia her biggest moments or maximum spotlight compared to others, but The Testaments Episode 9 does remind viewers why she remains one of Gilead's most interesting characters: You never know which side of her you will get.

Lydia is a fascinating character, both a loyal citizen of Gilead and an unsettling one, alternately repelled by its inhumanity and drawn to it at the same time. Dowd does not portray Lydia as a caricature of a bad or a good persona, instead drags her into an uncomfortable middle space in which guilt, calculative emotions, and repressed rage are constantly present.

The most remarkable thing about Dowd is that she accomplishes so much by remaining silent. A break or a change in pitch or voice is so big because Lydia's always one step ahead. After bearing with her for years in The Handmaid's Tale, Dowd keeps Aunt Lydia as the same erratic player she's been; The Testaments Episode 9 also suggests she could be one of Gilead's most dangerous players ever in Season 2.

Mattea Conforti’s devastating performance in The Testaments Episode 9

It's Mattea Conforti as Becka who's the centre of attraction in The Testaments Episode 9. The most harrowing part of the episode is when the young woman learns what is going on with her father, and Conforti's work in the acting department showcased how much she is capable of when it comes to feeling raw emotions.

The most stunning surprise: Becka slaying Dr. Grove, after discovering his abuse, is less triumphant than tragic, impulsive, and horrific. Conforti doesn't melodramatise the feeling of anger, loss, and urgency that is emanating from the moment.

But the consequences of the story are even more impactful. Becka is not empowered, but rather terrorized, isolated and betrayed. It's a performance that makes her the emotional anchor for the episode, and online fans are already hailing it as one of the season's best performances.
