Hulu has finally released the much-awaited follow-up series, The Testaments, bringing new characters to the familiar country of Gilead. The story follows a younger generation of girls, mostly teenagers who grew up in a strict system.

The first three episodes of the TV series were released on April 8, after which fans will get one episode every Wednesday. This means one episode per week as the show only has ten episodes in total.

The Testaments focuses on two very different girls: Agnes MacKenzi, who has been raised entirely within Gilead’s belief system. Right from childhood, Agnes has been taught to become obedient, calm and prepare herself to become a wife in the future.

On the other side, there's Daisy who comes from outside of Gilead and has a background connected to Canada. Since she didn't grow up with the same mindset as Agnes, Daisy brings a whole new perspective to the rigid system of the country.

More details below.

The Testaments premiere recap: Here's how the story begins

Set some years after The Handmaid’s Tale, the focus of the story in The Testaments shifts to Agnes, who is actually June's daughter and is now living within the Gilead regime at that time. There is nothing wrong with Agnes's life on the surface. She belongs to a wealthy family and goes to an elite school that is run by Aunt Lydia.

But under the surface of this life, everything in Agnes's life is being controlled in a very disturbing way. Every detail in Agnes's life is being very tightly controlled, even the way she plays with dolls, which reflects how normal the use of violence has become for children like Agnes.

Girls are specifically trained in school to be submissive wives and are divided into categories (by the roles they will play) that have color-coded identities. This colour coding reinforces the rigid and controlling nature of the lives of the girls in Gilead.

From their group of friends, several girls will have a different role than others, and they will all be trained to become what Gilead expects them to become. For example, Agnes's best friend is Becka, who has the same role as Agnes, but Becka will not be the same type of woman that Agnes will become.

Things start to change with the arrival of Daisy. She is different from the other girls because she is from outside of Gilead. When Daisy arrives, Agnes is asked to help and guide her through her journey even though Agnes has her own inner doubts.

Their worlds collide when both girls participate in the public punishment of a girl by being witnesses. For the other girls, their peers are no different than those who were on trial so the punishment does not faze them, but for Daisy, she experiences her first real loss and cruelty.

From that moment on, a fragile but significant bond is created through Agnes's decision to protect Daisy's secret. After some time, Agnes has a significant milestone in her life when she has her first period.

In Gilead, it is not a normal part of growing up. It signifies she can now marry. Instead of feeling pride, the thought of getting married terrifies her. The pressure placed on her grows both from others and from the sheer weight of normalcy being used as a method to blame and control.

Daisy's past is revealed through flashbacks. Daisy lived in Toronto with two loving parents who loved and cared for her and allowed her to grow up with options. This world is so different than Gilead that it will take time for Daisy's mind to process and accept her old memory as true.

But her journey into this world isn’t accidental, and hints begin to appear that she may be connected to resistance movements working against Gilead. By the third episode of The Testaments, the bond between Agnes and Daisy becomes stronger, even as danger quietly builds around them.

Agnes starts to sense that the life she believed in isn’t as perfect as she was taught. On the other side, Daisy struggles to maintain her composure in a place that feels fundamentally wrong to her.
