The series begins with the apparent suicide of Dale Washberg, the black sheep of Tulsa's influential family. Lee, a struggling bookstore owner and truthorian, suspects a cover-up. Lee discovers a trail of clues inside the collection of Jim Thompson's paperback novels. He eventually solves the twisted case rooted in corruption, power, and greed.

The finale episode, titled The Sensitive Kind, takes the viewers to a flashback sequence that almost feels like a fantasy when Dale visits Lee's bookstore. According to The Review Geek, Dale compliments Lee and calls him brave for putting out his work in public, ready to face scrutiny. Dale is curious when he learns about Lee's truthorian gigs. Dale tells him a quote from Jim Thompson's book,

"There is only one plot- things are not as they seem."

This is a crucial quote that helps Lee solve Dale's death. Lee realizes that there was some foul play involved in Dale's death.

Back in the present, Lee bursts into One Well church and points a gun at Frank. Marty jumps in to save Lee and identifies himself as an undercover federal agent, and says he needs to arrest Lee. The two men barely escape, even though Marty gets shot in his leg.

Back at the bookstore, the Native American artist Chutto breaks the bookstore window. When Lee chases him down, Chutto confronts Lee about his grandfather Arthur's death. Lee tries to make things right by helping them get their family land back, but Chutto refuses. This scene makes both Lee and the viewers realize that in this war over land, innocent lives are lost.

In the morning, Lee learns that Frank has walked in with a lawyer who said he killed Arthur in self-defense. The DA thus did not charge him, and Frank was released.

Lee was wrong to assume Betty Jo was an innocent victim. In fact, Arthur was dead because he confided in her about Dale's will. When Lee confronted Betty Jo, she said that nobody wanted Dale dead, and she admitted that she was working with Frank. She claimed she unlocked the door to let the two goons into the house that Frank sent. They were supposed to scare Dale, but accidentally killed him. Betty Jo staged it to look like a suicide. She said she did everything to keep herself and her daughter Pearl safe.

When Marty takes Donald to meet Lee at Cyrus's place, it becomes crystal clear that Donald knew nothing about Dale's death. He thought Dale had killed himself. Lee is also there with his article. Before he proceeded, he wanted to let Donald tell his side of the story.

Lee confirmed that Dale wanted to give half of the Washberg Indian Head Hill lands back to the family it was stolen from (Arthur's). This was a crucial problem for Donald, who wanted to sell the land. When Betty Jo found out, she teamed up with Frank to scare Dale. They contacted Allen to help them scare Dale, but the skinheads he sent ruined the task and killed Dale instead. Lee recorded Betty Jo's confession. Thus, Dale Washberg was killed by two goons who were helped by Betty Jo and Frank.

Donald, on the other hand, knew nothing about Dale's murder.

In the end, Lee decides not to publish the article titled The Murderer of Dale Washberg as it would ruin Donald's campaign. He uses it as leverage to do something even better. He makes a deal with Donald to return the land to Arthur's family and give ownership of it to the Osage Nation.

Donald announces it in a conference attended by Osage leaders and musicians. Pearl hugs Donald. Lee decides to turn his life around. He decides to put his daughter's needs first. He also suppresses his resentment towards Sam's fiancé, Johnny, and shows up for their wedding.

In the end, Frank is killed after Bonnie discovers the truth about her son, Blackie. She knows that his death was a cover-up and, in revenge, shoots Frank in broad daylight.
