The Night Manager creator, David Farr, is sharing his thoughts on Jonathan Pine and Teddy Dos Santos' relationship in Season 2.

Without doubt, their bond is one of the exciting elements of the series. We witness how a carefully constructed falsehood slowly seeps into the emotional world. The lines between purpose and yearning get hazy, and a war between mind and heart begins.

In a conversation with Variety, Farr explains how the relationship dynamics between them were a conscious choice by the makers. He also points out the most highly charged moment in The Night Manager Season 2, as he mentions:

"I think there is a genuine physical attraction, which is new for Pine, and I stand by it. I think it’s really truthful and important. I think the scene in the villa at the end of Episode 2 is the most erotic moment between them."

From the time when Jonathan Pine and Teddy's worlds collided in The Night Manager Season 2, there was passion felt in the air. Pine makes his way into Teddy's life under a cloak of deception, but both characters experience an unexpected shift.

The usually emotionally reserved Pine finds himself vulnerable. This is something he had never experienced before, so this disturbs him immensely. This matter of the heart feels more lethal to him than the actual mission he stepped out for. The attraction that Pine feels towards Teddy is not just yearning; it becomes risky.

Furthermore, in the interview, David Farr reads one of their moments as a symbolic representation of their bond. He states:

"Certainly, there are other ways in which Teddy and Pine could have explored each other, and decide to work together in that moment. But there is a very particular way of him diving in that pool, and holding onto his shirt as he’s looking down at him in his arms like he’s Mary looking at Jesus. It’s a very Catholic erotic moment. That physical attraction remains, but it shifts as soon as Roper arrives."

Farr's visually expressive analogy, combined with religious iconography, gives us a clearer picture of the depth and complexity of Jonathan and Teddy's connection. It gives us a sense of warmth, adoration, and wonder from Jonathan's end.

This analogy suggests that Pine's feelings are not just craving; it steps into the zone of unwavering love, care, and devotion. Upon the arrival of Roper, there is a rupture in the intimacy. So, there is also a strong sense of forbidden love in their bond.

There is also a hint of repression and suffering expressed in this religious imagery. It is a kind of love that surpasses self-control and intent. Jonathan, who had originally come into Teddy's world with a specific intent, slips into romantic intimacy. This brings him to a crossroads between mission and passion, leaving him emotionally exposed.

Farr even acknowledges Pine's authentic feelings for Teddy, as he adds:

"But as he even says, he causes damage when he falls in love with people. I think he genuinely falls in love with Teddy, but in a slightly different way."
