"There’s a time jump": Creator Bill Lawrence talks about what to expect in Shrinking Season 4

Shrinking's creator, Bill Lawrence, is all out teasing fans with new details about the upcoming season. The Apple TV comedy series was renewed for Season 4 last year, even before Season 3 premiered. While the release date for Shrinking Season 4 is not yet confirmed, creator Bill Lawrence, in recent talks with Variety, said that the upcoming season will have a shift in time.

In a statement, he said:

"People shouldn’t be surprised if there’s a time jump and it feels like we’re telling a completely different story."

Created by Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, and Jason Segel, the Shrinking Season 3 finale episode titled And That's Our Time is scheduled to release on April 8. Season 3 revolved around characters trying to move ahead in their lives. On one hand, Jimmy's daughter leaves for college, while on the other hand, Paul deals with health problems.

While the finale is yet to be released, viewers are expecting an emotional ending. At the same time, it will also be interesting to see how it will connect to the next season.

Bill Lawrence talks about what viewers can expect from Shrinking Season 4

Last week, Bill Lawrence uploaded a tweet on social media stating that Season 4 will show a completely new story with the same cast. This also led to a misunderstanding among the viewers that season 4 will continue with a new storyline with the existing cast playing new characters instead of continuing their own story.

Clearing up the confusion, the creator said that the cast will continue playing the same characters, not new ones. This means the story will still follow their lives, just with a time jump, so it might feel fresh but not like a full reboot.

Speaking with Variety, he added:

"I think people will feel when they come back to this show that it’s a completely different story. We feel that the characters of this show have enough stuff going on in their life that we were interested in seeing what a new story for these characters looks like… We’re already deep into the writers room, in the fourth season, so I’m lucky enough to know what happens. And I think people will dig it."

The cast of Season 4 will most probably include Christa Miller, Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Lukita Maxwell, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, and Ted McGinley. Since there's a time jump, there's a good chance new characters could also be introduced. However, nothing has been confirmed about this yet.

While there is no official release date confirmed for Season 4, Bill Lawrence mentioned in his post that he is excited to start the next story next year, suggesting that Shrinking Season 4 could arrive next year.

Following the release pattern of Season 1 and Season 3, Shrinking Season 4 might arrive in early 2027. However, Season 2 was released in October, which suggests it could also come out later in the next year if production takes more time.

Interested viewers will have to wait for an official update from the production house. It is available to stream on Apple TV, with the Season 3 finale scheduled to release on April 8.
