The Gilded Age Season 4 begins on a chaotic note with a near-death experience, a broken bond, and a marriage of convenience. The premiere episode begins with Duchess Gladys Russell preparing to give birth. However, the birth turns into a near-death experience and a secret that could devastate Gladys' future. Taissa Farmiga, who plays Gladys in The Gilded Age, shared her reaction to reading the script of the premiere episode (via Deadline):
"I was thinking. This poor girl does not get a break."
Farmiga acknowledged that despite Gladys leading a privileged life, her journey has been nothing short of an emotional rollercoaster. In Season 3, she was forced into an arranged marriage with the Duke, a decision orchestrated by her mother, Bertha. Although the two eventually fell in love, Gladys was not happy with her mother Bertha's manipulative plans. She also had to leave her home behind and relocate to Sidmouth Castle in England with her husband. In the end, the Duke turned out to be a loving partner, and as she was slowly building her life with the Duke, the traumatic childbirth experience left her shattered.
Farmiga noted:
"The first moment you see Gladys’s face in Season 4 is a bit intense.”
