Three episodes in, House of the Dragon Season 3 seems to have gone well for Rhaenyra. She sat down on the Iron Throne in the closing minutes of the second episode last week, and in the third episode, we saw Rhaenyra grapple with the responsibilities of the throne. Throughout the first act of the episode, we see the royal staff and people surrounding the new queen with their requests. But it is one of the petitioners in the throne room that plants the seed for one of the episode's key moments. This scene subtly sets up Rhaenyra's downfall, which may happen in the second half of House of the Dragon Season 3.Rhaenyra might have lost the support of the noble families in House of the Dragon Season 3: View this post on Instagram Instagram PostOne of the common citizens of King's Landing petitioned to meet Queen Rhaenyra to inform her about the noble families hoarding food in their castles. The noble families hoarded food during the blockade initiated by Rhaenyra herself in the previous season, which in the show's continuity happened just months ago. The petitioner informs the new queen that the common folk have been relying on rats for food for months.Rhaenyra consults her small temporary council and decides to hold a feast for the noble families. The King's Landing nobility accept her invitation, but they receive the shock of their lives when they are treated to a feast of dead rats. The feast was a distraction as Rhaenyra's soldiers raided these noble families' castles and freed the hoarded food. She later redistributes the hoarded food amongst the commoners, which earns her public support but surely ensures that she has lost the support of all these families. This House of the Dragon Season 3 episode shows that Rhaenyra's reign is not as stable as she believed, and the closing minutes tease a tumultuous season for the new queen ahead, as she has no support from the noble families.Rhaenyra alienates almost everyone in this episode: View this post on Instagram Instagram PostApart from losing the support of King Landing's noble families, Rhaenyra has lost the support of one of the strongest allies, Corlys Velaryon. She doesn't legitimize Addam as a Velaryon, but rather Hull. This would set up the Sea Snake betraying her in an upcoming episode of House of the Dragon Season 3. Corlys even does something that he has avoided for a long time: question the legitimacy of Rhaenyra's kids. While we don't know what happens next, we can see the seed for Corlys's betrayal in this episode. Rhaenyra herself isn't doing well; she is haunted by both the grief of losing Jace and killing Otto Hightower in the previous episode. At one point of this episode, Rhaenyra imagines Jace walking inside the Red Keep, hinting at the classic Targaryen madness.Adding to that is the looming threat of Ormund Hightower, who has laid siege to the town of Tumbleton. As Rhaenyra's treasury is empty and her allies alienated, she is at her most vulnerable at the worst possible time. If House of the Dragon Season 3 follows Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra will face even more shocking betrayals. All three seasons of House of the Dragon are available on HBO Max.
