This episode introduces new mutants, including Monet St. Croix, Quentin Quire, and Wing. When Jubilee gets detained during the mission after Emma Frost betrays the X-Force, she is sent to an illegal facility, where she finds kids with power-dampening collars. During a fight with Veruca Salt's Volcano Girls, when Jubilee gets cornered by security forces, she finds a small mutant girl hiding, and this brings back her rage. Jubilee eventually saves the mutant child.
Interestingly, the child Jubilee rescues might look quite familiar to hardcore Marvel fans. Turns out, it's none other than Maggie. The character Maggie is from the 1993-1994 miniseries, Marvels by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, which won the Eisen Awards.
Here's more about it.
X-Men '97 Season 2 Episode 2 Easter egg: Maggie's cameo and what does it mean
While Jubilee was escorted through the corridor of mutant prisoners donning inhibitor collars. Among them, she notices a pale young girl with a skull-like face, big eyes, and a malnourished body. She reaches out to Jubilee before passing away. That little girl is none other than Maggie.
In the 1994 comics titled 'Marvels', Maggie is introduced as a mutant child who is discovered by Phil Sheldon's daughter. She finds Maggie shivering in a park. Maggie claims that her parents have abandoned her, and she has been living on the streets since then. When Phil finds out about Maggie, he shelters her, despite his fears. Interestingly, Phil Sheldon undergoes a change after meeting Maggie. Her eyes evoke memories of the Holocaust, thus prompting Phil to change.
Maggie later leaves the Sheldons to protect them and finds refuge in a village in New Guinea. There, she uses her X-ray vision to help the community and teach them. The villagers also save her from the mutant-hunting Sennitels. In the 2008-2010 sequel series, Marvels: Eyes of the Camera, an adult Maggie reunites with the terminally ill Phil. It's here that we learn that she escaped to New Guinea and became a teacher. She thanks Phil for saving her life before he passes away.
In X-Men '97 Season 2 Episode 2, Maggie's cameo symbolises innocence lost. She is seen fearfully hiding in the dark, which represents how innocence is threatened due to violence. It's not just an Easter egg for Marvel fans; Maggie's cameo exposes how the violence has affected fellow mutants.
