There are not many shows that can survive losing a main character and Mobland without Tom Hardy might just go on the same route. When news broke this week that Hardy has been fired from the Paramount+ crime drama ahead of Season 3, the internet started writing the show's obituary in real time.

Hardy had reportedly clashed repeatedly with producers Jez Butterworth and David Glasser during the making of Season 2, showing up late to set, pushing back on scripts, and growing visibly irritated that a show built around him was slowly being reshaped into an ensemble piece. Paramount chose the producers over the star and although that might have been the right call professionally, but creatively it could be fatal.

The situation is about as messy as it gets. According to industry insider Matt Beloni, who broke the story in his Puck newsletter, Hardy was "apparently late to set a bunch," constantly angling for script changes, and increasingly unhappy that Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan were eating into what he felt was his show.

Butterworth apparently reached his limit and threatened to walk, at which point Paramount made their call and dropped Hardy instead. The actor himself hasn't said a word publicly and neither has Paramount.

Tom Hardy's exit from Mobland Season 2 will surely affect the show

Fans who loved Mobland would agree that he was the show. The show centers on Harry Da Souza, Hardy's character, a fixer and enforcer working deep inside the Harrigan crime family, and his presence has been one of the show's central selling points from the very beginning.

Social media lit up almost immediately after the Puck report dropped, with viewers openly saying they're done with the show if Hardy's gone. Hardy, being the lead character and a major driving force behind the show, leaves a big hole in the storyline if he doesn't return for the next season.

According to reports and multiple online chatter, viewers are complaining about the latest development and some are not even considering streaming the new season of Mobland without Tom Hardy in it. The newest updates have thereby given rise to speculations around a drop in viewership of the hit crime drama.

An anonymous comment on X however, contradicted the same, saying:

"If the allegations are true, sacking him is absolutely the right call, but let’s not pretend he wasn’t the entire engine of the show. Without him, it’s basically a shell of what it was."

The behind-the-scenes tension with Hardy isn't actually a new story. There have been multiple reports of friction with co-stars and directors across his career, most famously on Mad Max: Fury Road. On the other hand, Paramount appears to be betting that the show can expand its focus, leaning harder into the Harrigan family storylines and letting Mirren and Brosnan carry more weight. However, how fans will react to this is another story.

We will still get to see Hardy in Mobland Season 2, so we have one more run with Harry Da Souza before the door presumably closes. Whether his character gets killed off or quietly written out is still unclear. But the real question is if anyone will show up for Mobland Season 3 to find out.
