Sky Studios' latest British crime thriller, Under Salt Marsh, starring Kelly Reilly, just premiered its first two episodes, and viewers are already finding themselves deep inside the twisted murder mystery of the coastal town of Morfa Halen, somewhere in the United Kingdom.
The plot revolves around a primary school teacher named Jackie Ellis (portrayed by Reilly) whose life is turned upside down after she stumbles upon the lifeless body of one of her students, Cefin, right amidst the marshes.
With a town already facing challenges of coastal flooding and subsequent sea level rise, the apparent murder of an eight-year-old kid adds more tension to the whole situation. It is at this point that Detective Eric Bull (played by Rafe Spall) arrives in town and takes charge of the investigation, but it only brings back old stories.
Through the culminating suspense, Under Salt Marsh Episode 1 eventually reveals that Jackie used to work with Eric back in the day when another tragedy struck Morfa Halen. However, it all ended on a bitter note, leading Jackie to resign from the force, and the townsfolk developed hatred towards Eric due to some mishap in the case, but now it's all back to square one.
What history do Jackie and Eric have in Under Salt Marsh? Here's what Episode 1 revealed
Under Salt Marsh Episode 1 hits the perfect murder mystery note from the very beginning and against the backdrop of a town facing the risk of complete drowning, the plot unravels. As it appears, the townspeople are not ready to leave Morfa Halen and want more seawalls to be built but that seems an impossible solution given the current socio-economic hindrances.
The natives think they can deal with any adversity, even if it's as bad as a sea level rise of around five to six meters in a year (which is the projected threat). As tension surmounts, Jackie Ellis (while on her way back from an encounter with her secret lover, Dylan Rees, a local) comes across a dead body (Cefin lying face down in one of the ditches of the marshy land.
Jackie, who has been haunted by her niece Tessa's disappearance for years, goes into a state of shock, especially because she was close to Cefin. Struggling with the trauma, Jackie makes her way back to Cefin's parents to break the news to them, while Detective Eric Bull is already in town after reports from the first responder reached the station.
As the town goes into mourning an unexpected loss, Jackie tries to avoid Bull every time she sees him, finding a scope to interview her. Since Jackie was the first one to find Cefin's body, she becomes a person of interest in the case.
While Under Salt Marsh Episode 1 keeps the suspense alive, this cat-and-mouse chase between Ellis and Eric, the townsfolk seem to be agitated by the detective's intervention. It eventually becomes clear that Detective Eric Bull has already broken one family with an investigation (that failed) years back.
So, his recurrence is something no one wants, not even Ellis' secret love interest, Dylan. However, in Under Salt Marsh Episode 1, Eric finally gets the chance to come face-to-face with Ellis to take her statement and it is at this point that we learn that the two used to be on the force together (Jackie was Eric's superior).
At that time, the pair was assigned the case of the disappearance of a small girl named Tessa, who was also the niece of Ellis. However, Eric did mess up in the investigation and betrayed Ellis, forcing her to eventually quit the force, not to mention Tessa's disappearance also remained unsolved.
This led to a bitter relationship between the two partners who used to be rather close. But Under Salt Marsh Episode 1 reignites their story with another murder mystery haunting the town of Morfa Halen.
