Unfamiliar cast and characters guide: Here's who brought Netflix's German spy thriller to life

The latest German spy thriller, Unfamiliar, is coming to Netflix this February.

All six episodes are expected to drop on February 5, 2026.

The series follows a couple, Meret and Simon, who are former spies. They run a safe house in Berlin called The Nest. However, their lives take a sudden turn when a past threat surfaces, and they are plunged into danger. From past enemies to Russian agents and hitmen to former partners, the threat increases with every step. Can the couple save themselves, their daughter, and their marriage?

The synopsis of Unfamiliar Season 1 reads (via Netflix):

"When the past catches up with two former spies, their biggest challenge isn't car chase, shootouts or first fights- it's telling each other the truth."

The series is produced by Gaumont's German head, and Paul Coates serves as the showrunner. Lenart Ruff and Phillip Leinemann are the directors of the show.

Susanne Wolff as Meret Schäfer

Susanne Wolff plays the role of Meret Schäfer in Unfamiliar Season 1. She's a former spy and Felix's wife. As spies, they had made numerous enemies in the past. Can Meret save herself and her family? To know what happens next, watch Unfamiliar on Netflix.

In the trailer, Meret is seen bonding with her daughter, but as she asks about her past, she fumbles. In the next part of the trailer, she narrates her and her husband, Simon's, past as a former BND agent and how they are currently undercover. When she gets attacked by a former enemy, she understands that their cover might be blown, and they are the target of many whom they have offended during their BND days.

Felix Kramer as Simon Schäfer

Felix Kramer plays Simon Schäfer in Unfamiliar Season 1. He's also a former spy (BND agent), just like his wife, Meret. Together, the couple runs a safe house in Berlin for people who are undercover. As a past threat emerges, Felix and Meret need to act fast to save themselves and their marriage. Both Simon and Meret question each other's loyalties, and Simon utters,

"Being with you, brings out the worst in me."

Maja Bons as Nina

Maja Bons plays Nina in Unfamiliar Season 1. Nina is Meret and Felix's teen daughter. In the trailer, it looks like Nina is on a mission to dig up information about her parents' past and their real identity. She senses that they are hiding something as she utters,

"My parents are hiding something from me."

As Meret and Simon are plunged back into their dangerous world once again, Nina wanders for answers. She's also a target for the antagonist. Can Simon and Meret keep Nina safe?
