Netflix's hit romantic drama, Virgin River, wrapped up Season 7 with a dramatic cliffhanger.

Jack and Mel became parents to an adopted baby boy. Marley, the biological mother of the baby boy, was under Mel's care initially. Due to various complications, Marley decided to give up her child for adoption. However, when the couple who originally decided to adopt the baby backed out, Jack and Mel stepped up.

In the finale episode, Marley starts experiencing some critical symptoms that require immediate medical attention. Jack and Mel rush to the Grace Valley clinic. The doctors tell them that the baby has a heart issue and needs a specialist doctor for further treatment. Mel helps Marley with the delivery, and her baby boy is finally born, although he's not yet out of danger. The baby needs to undergo heart surgery at a different hospital. The episode ends with Jack and Mel with their baby boy in an ambulance as it finally sinks in that they are parents.

This leaves us wondering what Jack and Mel could name their son. Can it be Jack Jr., based on Jack's name? Or will it be sourced from the novel? Alexandra Breckenridge, who plays Mel in Virgin River, gave a major hint that the baby's name might be picked up from Robyn Carr's novel. She told TVLine,

"You know, we do take things from the books sometimes."

Here's more about it.

After Virgin River Season 7 wrapped, the viewers were left guessing what could be Mel and Jack's baby's name. The easiest guess is obviously Jack Jr., named after Jack. The other possible names include Rhett, Baby Vernon, to name a few.

However, Breckenridge has given the fans a major hint about the name of Mel and Jack's baby. She told TVLine that the name will possibly be from Robyn Carr's novel (the source material for the series). In the book, the birth of the baby isn't that stressful, and the couple names him David.

She continues,

"I totally spoiled it," Breckenridge adds with a laugh. "You know, maybe it's not! Maybe we don't go with that name."

It looks like Mel and Jack are going to name their adopted son, David, according to Robyn Carr's novel. Apart from that, the couple also had a daughter called Emma, so there remains a high chance that the makers named the boy based on this. Breckenridge also said that initially, it was decided that the name would be revealed in Season 7, but they finally decided to push it to Virgin River Season 8. However, the makers and the cast remain tight-lipped about the name they have picked for Mel and Jack's baby.

What is the potential release date of Virgin River Season 8?

Virgin River Season 7 ends with Jack and Mel in an ambulance with their adopted baby boy being transferred to a different hospital for an emergency surgery. Even though they are hopeful that the baby will pull through the health complications, as a couple who have been through a lot in the past, the fear remains. Speaking to Parade Magazine, Breckenridge said,

"“I think it’s going to be a real journey for the two of them,” she said. “Like any new parents, they’ll have to figure out how to balance their relationship, work, and home life.”

The filming for Virgin River Season 8 will begin in April 2026 in Vancouver and is expected to wrap up by August. Thus, as per the previous release schedules, Virgin River Season 8 could release in 2027. However, the official release date has not been revealed yet.
