With less than a week left for the Ted Lasso Season 4 release, Dr. Jacob is once again at the center of attention. In Ted Lasso Season 3, Ted, played by Jason Sudeikis, learns that his ex-wife Michelle, played by Andrea Anders, is dating Dr. Jacob Brianson, played by Mike O'Gorman.
Jacob was the same marriage counsellor that the couple saw during their divorce, which makes the situation worse, as Ted saw Michelle start a relationship with someone who was part of their divorce. From the beginning, Ted felt like Jacob always supported Michelle more during their sessions, making him feel left out.
While Season 3 ended in May 2023, fans are now bringing back the old debate about Dr. Jacob's relationship with Michelle and how it crossed a line, asking for consequences. A Reddit user, Illustrious-Mind-822, posted:
"Want consequences for Dr. Jacob"
The finale hinted that Michelle broke up with Dr. Jacob, leaving viewers curious to see what happens to him in Season 4.

Ted Lasso fans revisit Dr. Jacob's actions before the Season 4 release

In Ted Lasso, Dr. Jacob, who was Michelle's therapist in the beginning and later became the couple's therapist, starts dating Michelle, who was her client. Viewers saw his actions as crossing a boundary and hoped to see Dr. Jacob face the fallout from his actions in the series.
A Reddit user, Illustrious-Mind-822, who claimed to be a therapist, called out the character of Dr. Jacob, saying that Dr. Jacob first became Michelle's therapist and later started couples therapy with them, which they felt was not the ethical thing to do. The user also pointed out that he eventually started a relationship with Michelle.
The Reddit user added in the post:
"The only indication we get this is wrong is Dr. Fieldstone calling it "borderline unethical." There is nothing borderline about it; an intimate relationship with a client is a career killer, you will lose your license if a regulatory board finds out, and, depending on the state, a criminal offense."
As per the reported ethical standards, a therapist cannot date the client they are treating, as it is considered unethical and against professional rules. These rules help to protect the client from being taken advantage of while maintaining a professional boundary between them and their therapist.
The user pointed out that Dr. Fieldstone's description was too mild, saying a therapist dating a client is a serious violation that can lead to losing their license, and hoped the show would show Dr. Jacob facing consequences.
"I just want a simple exchange. "How's Dr Jacob?" "It's just Jacob now," another Reddit user wrote.
"Get in line, we all want him in jail or license suspended. But the show isn’t about that kind of stuff," one more Reddit user wrote.
"Agreed. They brushed it off very easily in the show, but in real life it’s, like you say, a career killer," another Reddit user added.
As of now, the creators of Ted Lasso, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, Jason Sudeikis, and Joe Kelly, have not directly addressed the controversy around Dr. Jacob's relationship with Michelle or the possible professional consequences of his actions as her therapist.
