The True Blood actor shared his 7-year life-threatening health battle with ABC's Rhiannon Ally. However, people didn't know that he was struggling with something very human. The actor revealed,
"I didn't know it at the time, but it was like I had a bomb strapped to my chest and I didn't know that it was ticking down."
After Joe had been diagnosed with the health issue, he lost 60 pounds over the next seven years. He went through several colonoscopies, and in 2016 he went through emergency surgery where part of his intestines was removed. Joe revealed,
"I was in so much pain that when I woke up and found out that they had cut my large intestine out, and then they also hadn't found out what was wrong."
The medical procedure left him unable to use the bathroom normally and forced him to depend on an ostomy bag.
The True Blood star thanked his ex-wife for the support
Joe Manganiello thanked his ex-wife Sofía and said that he owed her all the credit because he believed he might not have survived without her support. The actor said,
"I give her all the credit in the world because I don't know that I would be here today if it weren't for that."
According to Entertainment Weekly, the True Blood star revealed that while he was unconscious at the hospital, the doctors contacted Sofía and asked her to make a final decision. She made a difficult but life-saving choice of removing her husband's intestine and allowed surgeons to cut a hole in his abdomen to divert his small intestine.
The True Blood star also said that Sofía was by his side when he regained consciousness after a 10-hour surgery. After the surgery, Sofía explained to him that the operation had saved his life but left him with an ostomy bag for an indefinite period, possibly for the rest of his life.
