Luke Grimes is finally talking about what comes next for his character, Kayce Dutton, after Monica's death in Marshals.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Luke Grimes admitted that leaving Monica out of Marshals was his biggest worry about the series. Monica was played by Kelsey Asbille in the series.
Speaking of his favorite part of Season 1, Grimes told the outlet that the tribute to Monica's death was a special moment for everyone involved. He added that they filmed a beautiful ceremony that almost brought the cast to tears. In his statement, Grimes revealed that the ceremony led by Mo Brings Plenty, which also honored his late nephew, felt real and came naturally.
Grimes also spoke about what lies ahead for his character, Kayce, in Marshals by saying:
"And now, we can lay that to rest and maybe try some new things. But I will say he's still wearing the ring, and Spencer and I have talked about, 'When do I take it off? Are we gonna make this a thing, or is it just gonna not be there one day?' So, we're still trying to figure that out."

Luke Grimes explains how Kayce's life could change after Monica's death in Marshals

In Marshals Season 1, viewers saw Kayce Dutton struggling with Monica's death while trying to raise his son Tate and focus on his work as a U.S. Marshal. At one point, we also thought that there was chemistry building between him and Dolly Weaver. But in the end, Kayce made it clear that he wasn't ready to move on. He even continued wearing his wedding ring, even after Monica died.
However, things could look different in Season 2, as the attention is now shifting to Andrea Cruz. Kayce and Andrea share a strong friendship. At the same time, their similar experiences help them understand each other. But will their bond turn into something more, or will Kayce continue to keep his feelings to himself? This is one question the show leaves open as of now.
Speaking about his initial concerns about Marshals, Luke Grimes said he found it hard to imagine Kayce's life without Monica. He explained that while the rest of Yellowstone focused on the Dutton family's fight over land, Kayce's story was always about his love for his wife. However, he later realized that Monica's death could open the door to new storylines, as long as the show gave her loss the attention it deserved.
After talking about the ceremony honoring Monica, Grimes shared what fans can expect when it comes to Kayce's future, saying that he can now start exploring new parts of his life. Grimes also shared that he and showrunner Spencer Hudnut are still figuring out when Kayce will take off his wedding ring and whether it will be a big moment or simply happen one day.
The strong friendship between Kayce and Andrea has also led fans to question whether they could be a couple on-screen in the future since Kayce doesn't have Monica in his life anymore.
Speaking about their growing bond in Marshals, Grimes said he enjoys a good "will-they-won't-they" story that makes people want the characters to get together. He added that Kayce and Andrea share a special connection, as their relationship is built on a strong friendship rather than just attraction. However, he also talked about the storyline, saying:
"And honestly, we don't know, like, I don't know where it's going."
From Grimes' answer, it looks like viewers will have to wait and see where their friendship leads in the end. Kayce might slowly start a new chapter in his life, and his bond with Andrea could also grow stronger, but as Grimes pointed out, even the people making the show are still figuring out where their story will go.
Marshals Season 2 is currently airing on CBS.
