Community fans have been waiting a really long time. For years, the idea of a Community movie was just an ongoing discussion, and many thought that it was probably not going to happen, but now Donald Glover is telling us that it is happening. He was talking to Entertainment Tonight recently, and he told fans not to lose hope on the Community movie because, as per him, "We're working on it right now." He also added that:

"I know everybody's been saying that for forever, but I swear to you, I'm not lying about this. I really think that something is gonna happen soon."

When you see how much time fans have actually spent on this, even that one line seems like huge news. Community lasted for six seasons (from 2009 to 2015). The first five seasons were on NBC, and then Yahoo Screen picked up the last season.

The series follows a group of misfits as they join together to form a study group at Greendale Community College, but it also has one of the largest, most dedicated fan communities of all time. While the "six seasons and a movie" concept began as an inside joke on the show, the fans made it into a reality; they never gave up on that dream. Well, it has now been over 10 years since Community went off the air, and it appears that the film is actually on its way.

Glover also provided some insight into what type of communication the cast currently has access to. He stated that he and his fellow castmates have been discussing the movie via a texting group. "We were just on the text chain talking about it." Glover joked that when you are across the earth, there can be nearly 83 unread messages waiting for you to read. Although small, this fact reveals much about what is occurring. Everyone is talking to each other and the Community movie is a topic of discussion.

The cast is coming back for the Community movie, and here is what we know so far

Peacock gave the green light for the Community movie in 2022. At that time, Peacock verified that nearly all the original cast will return for the film. Confirmations of returning cast include Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong. Yvette Nicole Brown, who portrayed Shirley Bennett, has also confirmed her participation. However, she stated in October 2024 that they are still working on Shirley's storyline in the script to make sure she is properly included.

The script is in motion, according to Glover, who discussed with Entertainment Tonight that the script was finished, but he had not seen it. It is clear that everyone has spent a lot of time getting this storyline to a point where they are all happy with it. Harmon has been working with a former Community writer, Andrew Guest, on the script, and the project was chosen in 2024 to receive part of $51.6 million in incentives as one of the 19 productions selected to receive California's film and TV tax credit program.

Glover has hinted about the storyline of the movie in an interview done with The Hollywood Reporter; according to him, the storyline revolves around a college reunion, and Abed (Danny Pudi's character) is a well-established director, and basically, this reunion is his next big project. Glover's reaction after listening to the idea was that he thought it was awesome.

Why has the wait been this long?

If you have been following the Community movie news over the past couple of years, you already know that the road here has not been smooth. The project faced significant setbacks because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that paused Hollywood productions for a big part of 2023. But even before that, getting everyone's schedules to line up has been a challenge, given that several cast members have gone on to much bigger projects since the show ended.

There was also a period where fans online were putting the blame on Glover specifically, assuming his busy schedule, between acting, music as Childish Gambino, and producing, was the main reason things kept getting pushed back. Glover addressed this directly at an event, saying with a laugh that "everybody is hating on me on the internet and it's not me," pointing out that his schedule may have been the issue at one point, but not anymore.

Joel McHale also stepped in to clear the air, telling GQ that the delays were his fault, not Glover's. "If it's anybody's fault, it's my schedule on this one. It's not his at all," McHale said, adding that the funding is in place and Peacock is paying for it. He said he was hopeful it would all come together, and based on everything being said now, it really does seem like it will.

For fans who have been waiting since 2015, the finish line is closer than it has ever been.
