Hulu's upcoming TV show Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel revisits the shocking murder of a Florida-based attorney and law professor named Daniel Markel. The person was killed in his Tallahassee home by Sigfredo Garcia, who was hired by Katherine Magbanua, an employee of the Adelson Institute. Sigfredo shot Daniel in the head after a divorce issue arose with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson.

The Murder of Dan Markel highlighted that five people were found guilty in the case, including Wendi's mother and brother, Donna and Charlie Adelson, respectively. The other three were Sigfredo Garcia, Katherine Magbanua, and Luis Rivera. However, Wendi was not charged even though prosecutors said she was an unindicted co-conspirator.

The eldest son of the Adelson family, Rob Adelson, discusses the case with FBI agent Pat Sanford in a recorded interview and explains how he testified against his own mother during her trial. The interview also featured Sanford, who devoted half of his career to solving the case, and Charlie's ex-girlfriend June Umchina, who shares details about their relationship and recounts what Charlie told her regarding Dan's murder.

The Murder of Dan Markel shows that Daniel Markel was a prominent legal scholar at Florida State University and a Harvard graduate. He studied the idea of punishment and spent many years exploring it so that sentencing choices in the criminal justice system could be made with a stronger understanding.

The 41-year-old Markel was also a caring father of two young sons. Before his death, he was in a tough fight with his ex-wife Wendi over who would take care of their children.

Wendi wanted to take their sons from their Tallahassee home to South Florida, where her family lived. However, after filing for divorce, a family court judge refused her request and ruled that she had not shown enough proof that moving was in the best interest of the children.

On July 18, 2014, Daniel had just reached his home, and soon after, a gunman fired two shots into his head and escaped. After hearing gunshots from Daniel's garage, a neighbor called 911 and described that he saw a light-colored Toyota Prius driving away. The professor was declared dead the next day.

Wendi revealed to investigators that during their divorce, one of her older brothers joked about hiring a hit man to kill Daniel. She also explained that her parents had stronger reasons to dislike him because they felt that he had hurt their daughter.

After Daniel's death, Wendi also revealed to investigators in a recorded interview that her ex-husband was litigious and treated her poorly. Wendi consistently denied any role in her husband's murder, and therefore, she has never faced criminal charges.

The gunman, Sigfredo Garcia, identified by Luis Rivera, was arrested in the summer of 2016. The defendant entered a plea of not guilty, but after three years, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment without any chance of parole.

The Murder of Dan Markel further reveals that Garcia had a direct link to Daniel's murder and the Andelson family. Investigation reports revealed that Katherine had dated the protective older brother who once joked about hiring a hit man. The chief assistant state attorney revealed that Katherine was employed at the Adelson Institute, a dental clinic owned by Wendi's parents.

After murdering Daniel, Garcia called Katherine and said,

"Everything is done. Make sure you have my money. I’m on my way."

The Murder of Dan Markel also reveals that Katherine was arrested in October 2016 and charged with murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in Dan’s death. She denied the accusations and later testified at a trial three years afterward that she had done legitimate work for the Adelson family.

The jury couldn't reach a decision and finally declared a mistrial. However, after three years, Katherine was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to life in prison.
