Under Salt Marsh Episode 1 opens on an intense note with the town of Morfa Halen struck by the tragic death of an eight-year-old kid named Cefin. At the centre of the story is a woman named Jack Ellis, who is the first person to stumble upon Cefin's body while wandering around the marshy land.

The incident sends a wave of shock across town leaving the deceased's family shattered while an outside detective (who apparently does not have a great rapport with the townsfolk) takes over the investigation. What initially appeared to be a case of accidental drowing eventually culminates into a bigger more twisted plot as Cefin's forensic analysis and postmortem reports come in.

It becomes clear that there was external intervention in the death thereby hinting it as murder. However, an age old case of disappearance brings up a potential connnection between the two incidents. Keep reading to find out more about Under Salt Marsh.

What actually happened to Cefin in Under Salt Marsh? Here's what we learnt from Episode 1

As we see in Under Salt Marsh Episode 1, Cefin Hall's death is initially perceived as drowning by accident. However, by the end of the episode, the postmortem report reveals a darker truth behind the whole case.

After Detective Eric Bull's first conversation with Gareth from the Wales Environment Institute it is learnt that the ditch where Cefin was found dead help to:

"Drain the rainwater coming off the top of the mountain, and then they channel it all around the town."

However, suspicions arise when Detective Bull learns that the ditch in discussion contained seawter (after the forensics confirmed the same with pH tests). Consequently, the whole situation seemed to make more sense to Eric Bull after he got hold of the postmortem and forensic results from a woman named Irene.

Under Salt Marsh Episode 1 reveals that there was a bee sting on Cefin's neck region and samples of some other person's hair was also retrieved from his T-shirt. It is also confirmed that there are "no signs of sexual abuse" and "initial thoughts were accidental drowning, larynx spasm, lungs full of water".

The case however takes an unexpected turn when it is learnt that the sample of water retrieved from the ditch does not match the one found in Cefin's lungs (which was freshwater). So, Eric comes to the conclusion that his body was moved and he did not die in the ditch.

Moreover, Under Salt Marsh ends with a greater twist as we see Jackie Ellis going through the stuff of her missing niece, Nessa Taman. At this point, she comes across a strange drawing of a mysterious person wearing a suit and surprisingly, the same sketch is found from Cefin Hall's notebook. The episode thus concludes on a cliffhanger leaving the chances of potential connection between the two cases open.
