Remember how Mrs.Stokes' goat, Hilda, gave Siegfried a hard time in All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 Episode 4? Hilda is a goat with opinions and is known for her sassy attitude.In Episode 4, Hilda made Siegfried chase her right in the middle of the town. Mrs. Stokes brought her to the clinic because she was having issues with her hind legs. Hilda manages to trick Siegfried and Mrs. Stokes at Skeldale House and appears in perfect condition. But soon, Mrs. Stokes finds out that it's still having the same issue. When Siegfried arrives, he tells him that at times, goats hide their condition to avoid appearing weak. It's a survival instinct. Siegfried finally examines her and finds out she has a shelly hoof. He then treats her accordingly. Mrs. Stokes and Hilda return in Episode 7.Unfortunately, Mrs. Stokes' goat, Hilda, dies in episode 7 of All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 due to overconsumption of laurels. When Siegfried tries to feed it to Hilda, she makes him chase her once again. In the end, he finally manages to feed her. But her condition doesn't improve.When Siegfried returns to the farm to mend the barn door, Mrs. Stokes tells him that Hilda has grown weaker and hasn't eaten anything. Siegfried tells her that this is a common side effect of her condition. When Hilda's condition worsens, Mrs.Stokes frantically calls Skeldale House.Hilda is barely breathing, and she has stopped moving, too. Siegfried suggests that Hilda has toxicosis, and he needs to perform an emergency rumenotomy. When Siegfried goes out to fetch his bag from the car, he notices a torn sack full of laurel. It's an easy guess. Hilda has eaten a lot of laurel, which makes it impossible for her to recover. Siegfried tells Mrs. Stokes that surgery at that point will not help. There's no point in making Hilda go through the painful procedure. Mrs. Stokes thinks Siegfried could still do something to make her feel better. But Siegfried replies that the best thing for Hilda would be to let her die in peace.Mrs. Stokes breaks down. She loves Hilda, and she has been her companion for years. Thus, letting her go is not easy. But Mrs. Stokes finally agrees for the sake of Hilda. Siegfried puts her down. Mrs. Stokes sings a song to soothe Hilda. She says,"You have been a good girl. Siegfried tried to keep his guard up, but Hilda's sudden death changed his perspective. He rushes to Skeldale House and rings up Dorothy. He invites her to the Drover's.
