Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man ended on a dramatic note with Thomas Shelby breathing his last while lying in his eldest son Duke Shelby's arms. The plot of the latest spin-off delivered quite a noteworthy arc for Barry Keoghan's new character and in a short span of two hours, the film's conclusion hit a climactic moment for the new "rom baro".

At the start of the Peaky Blinders sequel, Duke is portrayed as a younger and more reckless version of Tommy Shelby in his prime days: Looting around, bossing the police and wiping away anyone who stands in the way of his gang's evil ways. With a backdrop of a tumultuous Birmingham being bombed by 40s German troops, Duke Shelby is seen shaking hands with the Nazis for one of the most dangerous business deals.

However, through multiple twists in the plot, Duke finally chooses the right path and wins the hearts of the viewers by wearing the Gypsy Crown most legitimately. But that's not the end of the road, as now in Tommy's absence, the entire weight of the kingdom is on his shoulders, which also puts the next sequel series' story into perspective.

What's next for Duke Shelby in the Peaky Blinders universe?

Duke Shelby is portrayed as a much more chaotic version of Thomas Shelby in the latest Peaky Blinders movie. Unlike his father, he has never had to fight for wealth or power, as Tommy left everything in his name while leaving his gangster lifestyle behind.

Duke has his cruel and scary ways of getting work done and even the coppers of Birmingham do not dare to speak up against him. The biggest difference between him and Thomas Shelby is the balance of character.

Tommy, who rose from illegally betting on race horses to being a member of parliament, has a calm and composed outer core, making him even more formidable. He has a strange confidence even while he stands unarmed in front of his enemies because he is not just a fighter.

Tommy Shelby is also an expert with his way with words: What we can call a great manipulator and persuader. While a major part of it comes from being experienced in warfare and dealing with gangsters, it is something that is majorly lacking in Duke Shelby.

As witnessed in The Immortal Man, Duke has quite a volatile mind and often finds it difficult to choose sides. He has a good inner side, but his ecstatic presence often makes him lose his balance.

Duke had almost agreed to shake hands with Beckett and betray the Peaky Blinders until his conscience drove him to do right by his own ones. It is at this point that his love for family (which has also always been a big thing for Tommy) won over the lust of rising in the ranks.

However, the sad conclusion to the Peaky Blinders spin-off leaves major challenges for Duke, especially in the absence of his father. Most importantly, almost all the first generation of the Shelby gang are now gone, leaving Duke with all the responsibility and thereby making him the central character of the franchise.

Moreover, Barry Keoghan has also been confirmed to return i---n the upcoming sequel series which will be set in the 1950s. Given the fact that Sir Oswald Mosley, one of the most impactful antagonists, did not appear in the newest film (and his story of being imprisoned at the time of the Second World War took place before The Immortal Man), Duke might be facing big challenges from the fascist leader if he ever makes a return.

As confirmed in a recent press release, the next sequel series will see a new version of the Peaky Blinders who would be running a deadly "race to own Birmingham's massive reconstruction project" in the aftermath of World War II. And Duke Shelby, as it is quite evident, will lead the family into the new string of businesses, thereby posing a big challenge for the new protagonist.

Moreover, the final scene of The Immortal Man also made it clear that Johnny Dogs and Tommy's other associates have pledged their allegiance to the new Gypsy King, which might have hinted at their return to the franchise. With loyal friends like Charlie Strong and Curly around him, Duke would have fewer chances of making mistakes, as he is still new to the game.

As it appears, Duke Shelby has a bumpy road ahead of him with new enemies lurking around and not many people to guide him. The Peaky Blinders will once again rise from the ashes of the Small Heath, Birmingham blitz with their new leader, Duke, having bigger shoes to fill.
