Off Campus is everything a slow-burn drama needs, plus an entire semester of college romance, tension in the hockey rink, friendships gone awry, and more. However, not only is Garrett and Hannah's chemistry winning fans over, but they have also been equally mesmerized by the show's beautiful production locations.

The series was shot on real-life campuses, hockey arenas, and cozy neighborhoods, transforming these places into the fictional, dreamy Briar University. The locations range from vast university grounds to chic bars that look way cooler in contrast to any regular student hangout spots and let's face it, they deserve as much importance as the Off Campus cast members.

Briar University was actually filmed at UBC

If Briar University seemed too good to be true, it was because the makers of Off Campus shot much of their film at University of British Columbia, perhaps the most cinematic campus in Canada. The university is at the center of the series, serving as the backdrop for everything, from an embarrassing tutoring session to an emotional hallway chat.

The showy main-character-walking-to-class energy is what UBC gives off, in a modern building with some waterfront views, and a vast green space. This is where many of Hannah and Garrett's early scenes were filmed, and they helped in promoting the college life fantasy, where every hallway has just the perfect amount of lighting and every conversation gains meaning.

The key to Off Campus being such a huge success is that it looks naturally dreamlike. The wide corridors and huge academic buildings add a touch of elegance to the place, feeling unforced, just like the way the series was shot. And that's why fans are seeking out the real-life locations behind Hannah and Garrett’s story.

The hockey scenes were filmed in real Vancouver arenas

Sports scenes are only believable in a sports romance if they are filmed in real-life venues and Off Campus gets that right by utilising some of the athletic locations in Vancouver. The series has a few hockey scenes but instead of a smooth, boring studio look, it's shot at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, which also has a real college hockey feel to it.

The Pacific Coliseum itself was also used for some of the scenes in the series, typically the locker-room scenes and some game moments, lending the sport of hockey a whole new level of scale and intensity. This is one of the reasons why Off Campus is more intense and convincing than the typical teen dramas.

Real arenas add to the grounded reality behind Garrett's athlete lifestyle and as a result, the romance feels more lived-in, energetic, and believable.

Vancouver became the Off Campus’ romantic playground

Off Campus recreates its warm and emotionally wild world, away from the hockey rinks. The Heatley, the East Vancouver bar that doubles as Malone’s, sees most of the friendships, flirtations, and emotional breakdowns unraveling, while DOUGLAS, Autograph Collection, offers a sleek backdrop for the more polished and dramatic moments in the show.

Vancouver is more than just a backdrop; it becomes a part of the series. The city lights, the contemporary architecture and its cinematic streets even make ordinary scenes feel soft and romantic. It's just a perfect match for the comforting, dramatic, falling-in-love vibe of the show.
