Where to watch 1883? Streaming details of the Yellowstone prequel, explored

1883 is a Yellowstone spin-off that was set in the 19th century. Like every other spin-off of the acclaimed Western, it is available to stream on Paramount+. The ten-episode miniseries was marketed as a one-season series rather than multiple seasons. Moreover, it seems that the first spin-off is a stepping stone towards the post–Civil War generation of the Dutton family.

Since then, six more spin-offs of the franchise are in the works. But the most popular Yellowstone spin-off apart from 1883 is 1923, which ran for two seasons.

Where to watch 1883?

As mentioned earlier, the entirety of 1883 is accessible through streaming on Paramount+. The spin-off ended in a definitive way, meaning there is no direct Season 2. But the series further spun off into two seasons of 1923, which starred Harrison Ford. Taylor Sheridan addressed the lack of a second season in a 2022 Deadline interview:

"I created this peek through time to show you this one specific journey. I’m not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily after, or didn’t. I’d rather you imagine it, and wonder what Thomas and Noemi made of their lives. You never get to see how James and Margaret move on. You did seem them in a flashback as having moved on, and so that’s what I cared to explore. On to the next peek through the window. I also wanted to create something you could watch and be completely enthralled and fulfilled, having never seen Yellowstone. Let it live on its own merits. Yes for those fans of Yellowstone, there are some real Easter eggs and understanding you can take away from that, that informs the way you watch Yellowstone. I like that model. For me, as a storyteller it feels close ended. I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then."

In the same interview, Sheridan revealed that he was moving on to another spin-off, 1923:

"Yeah, peek through a different window into a different era. Again, I don’t think of any of these as spinoffs, but rather as complete stories that have common roots. My goal with the next one would be that you could never have seen 1883 or Yellowstone, and still have a fully realized experience as a viewer."

What's next for the Yellowstone franchise?

The upcoming Yellowstone spinoff is The Madison. Initially conceived as a sequel series called 2024, the project evolved into its current form. The Madison is set to premiere next month on March 14, 2026. Like every other series in the franchise, The Madison is going to premiere on Paramount+. The Michelle Pfeiffer-led series follows the Clyburn family. The official logline of the series describes it as:

“Heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”
