Yellowstone came to an end with Season 5 on December 15, 2024, and while there are a few spin-offs of the show on the way, the first show of the franchise is officially over. But there was one detail in the finale episode, Life Is a Promise, that might have piqued your interest.

At the beginning of the final episode of Yellowstone, the show paid tribute to Bob Avila with a short message. But who was Bob Avila? Let's find out.

Who was Bob Avila in Yellowstone?

Bob Avila was an American Professional horseman who passed away on November 9, 2024. Avila grew up with a father who was a rodeo cowboy and a trainer, and thus knew horses from a young age. He did try to have a career away from horseriding and horses in general, but life brought him back to where he belonged. Bob Avila was one of the most qualified horsemen and since the show focuses on ranches, horseriding and the Rodeo, Avila played a small guest role in the show.

In a Season 3 episode titled I Killed a Man Today, Avila played himself and showed off a horse. This happened on screen when John Dutton was talking to his grandson, Tate, and telling him all about horses. Since Avila was such an important horseriding professional and had been part of the show, Yellowstone paid a tribute to him after his demise. When the finale of the show aired on December 15, 2024, it began with a short tribute message that said,

"This episode is dedicated to Bob Avila. See you down the dusty trail, amigo."

While many did not understand who Bob Avila was or why he was paid a tribute, horse-riding fans know how heartfelt and meaningful that tribute was. No matter how small a cameo Avila had in the show, the show remembered to honour him.

Yellowstone starred Kevin Costner as John Dutton III, Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, Kelly Reilly as Bethany Dutton, aka Beth, Wes Bentley as James Michael Dutton, Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, Kelsey Asbille as Monica Long Dutton, Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton, Jefferson White as Jimmy Hurdstrom, Danny Huston as Dan Jenkins, Gil Birmingham as Chief Thomas Rainwater, Forrie J. Smith as Lloyd Pierce, Denim Richards as Colby Mayfield, and Ian Bohen as Ryan, among others.

Yellowstone was created and executive-produced by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. Other executive producers behind the show were Kevin Costner, David C. Glasser, Christina Alexandra Voros, Michael Friedman, and Art Linson. John Vohlers and Michael Polaire produced the show. The production companies behind the show were Linson Entertainment, Bosque Ranch Productions, and Treehouse Films. 101 Studios was one of the companies behind the show from Seasons 2 to 5, and MTV Entertainment Studios was attached to the production for Seasons 4 and 5.

Yellowstone is streaming on Paramount+. It's spin-offs, Marshals will premiere on CBS on March 1, 2026 and The Madison will premiere on Paramount+ on March 14, 2026.
