Rachel Nickell’s gruesome murder became the forefront of news for many years. The brutality, along with the aspect of Rachel’s son, Alex, being the sole witness to the gruelling nature of the crime inflicted on his mother at just two years old, left a lasting impact on him.
In recent years, Netflix has brought forth many true crime shows that not only unveil the gruelling details of the case but also depict the struggles that the victim’s family has to go through because of the tragedy. Through The Witness, Netflix once again brings forth the details of Rachel Nickell’s murder case and the aftermath of her death, told by Rachel’s partner, Andre, and Alex.
The Witness unveils Rachel Nickell’s brutal murder case and more
In July 1992, Rachel Nickell, while taking her two-year-old son, Alex, to play on Wimbledon Common, was attacked by a man. The man s*xually assaulted her and then stabbed her 49 times. This whole brutal incident was witnessed by Rachel Nickell’s son, Alex.
Through The Witness, Alex and Rachel’s partner Andre opens up about the details of the crime and the struggles that they went through after Rachel’s death because of the way the media treated the two of them. Right after Rachel’s brutal death, the media found great interest in Alex and also named him the “tragic tot”. Because of the relentless pursuit of the media, Alex and Andre had to move away from their home to France.
However, even after moving to France, the constant pestering by the media did not stop. It led them to move to Spain. In 2024, Andre and Alex returned to London for The Witness, where they open up about the incidents that happened to them after Rachel Nickell’s death. After Rachel’s murder, the police were able to capture Colin Stagg, who then spent 13 months in custody. He was later cleared of the crime and was also compensated in 1994. Ten years after the murder, in 2002, Rachel’s case was reopened. Through a DNA sample, it was found that Robert Napper was the actual killer.
During the time of the murder, Rachel Nickell was only 23 years old. Though Alex was able to provide a “picture-perfect” description of the assailant and did not have any more details that could help the police with the case, he was “asked to constantly relive” the “worst day” over and over again. In an interview, Alex notes that “taking a child back to it again and again” was “something demonic”.
In The Witness, the constant media intrusion that Alex and Andre had to go through in their lives is depicted. It is also revealed that the police had to apologise, as they missed many chances to capture Robert Napper before Rachel Nickell was brutally murdered. Rob Williams is the screenwriter for The Witness and has noted that both Alex and Andre “passionately” feel the need to tell this story.
They want to “show what’s possible” through the Netflix true crime series. Rob Williams has also added that The Witness is not just a “normal excavation of a true crime”. There is a “purpose” behind telling Alex and Andre’s story, as it is a “father-son story”.
The father and son’s relationship was deeply impacted after the death of Rachel. However, through the years, they have formed a deeper connection and were “really keen” to talk about the aftermath of the brutality that happened to Rachel. In the series, Alex’s character is depicted by Max Fincham, while Jordan Bolger brings life to Andre’s character.
