Who is VisionQuest's Thomas Shepard? Marvel's latest clip gives an insight into the new MCU hero

Marvel has posted a clip about Thomas Shepard's return in the MCU, as VisionQuest is just a week away from its release. The clip in question begins with a scene from the Agatha All Along finale in which we see a dead boy come back to life as Tommy's soul enters the body. Then, suddenly, we see an older Thomas Shepard recounting the event from the Agatha All Along finale.

For everyone who doesn't know, Thomas 'Tommy' Shepard is none other than Billy Kaplan/Maximoff's twin brother. Thus, Tommy is Wanda and Vision's son, who has his uncle Quicksilver's speedster powers. The VisionQuest trailer also includes a scene of Tommy using his powers; thus, we can expect him to have a significant role in the MCU going forward.

Ahead of VisionQuest - Here's what you need to remember about Thomas Shepard:

As mentioned earlier, Tommy Shepard is one of the Maximoff twins born to Wanda and Vision. Unlike in the MCU, Tommy is the grandson of Magneto in the comics, a relationship that regularly plays out throughout the pages of Marvel Comics. Introduced in the comics alongside Billy in 1986, Tommy and his twin brother share one of the most complicated origins in Marvel Comics.

Wanda unknowingly created the twins using scattered fragments of Mephisto's soul. The twins supposedly "die" as soon as the devil of the Marvel Universe reclaims his fragmented soul. But Wanda's power was embedded in the twins' souls and destroyed Mephisto. It is because of the Scarlet Witch's power that these fragmented souls were reincarnated as Thomas Shepard and Billy Kaplan.

The MCU streamlines this complicated origin by not including Mephisto in the origin of the twins at all. Except for "Quicksilver" calling his nephews "demon spawns" in WandaVision, the MCU has not addressed the twins' connection with Mephisto, even if the devil is technically a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What is Tommy Maximoff's origin in the MCU?

Billy and Tommy Maximoff were introduced in the MCU in WandaVision Episode 3 as babies. The kids suddenly age up twice by the fifth episode, and the twins supposedly remain that age for the rest of the series. The eighth episode confirms that Wanda used chaos magic to build a magical hex around Westview to act out her sitcom reality.

The chaos magic is also supposedly what gives the twins life. WandaVision ends with Wanda finally bringing down the Westview hex, freeing the town, which also means that Vision and the twins "die". But Agatha All Along reveals that Billy's soul entered the body of a boy named William Kaplan.

We see something similar in the Agatha All Along finale as Tommy's soul enters the body of a drowning boy. This scene sets the stage for Tommy's role in VisionQuest.

Is VisionQuest set after Agatha All Along?

Yes, VisionQuest is set after the events of Agatha All Along. The latest clip sees Tommy describing the drowning incident we saw in the Agatha All Along finale. It appears that Tommy has been reborn as Thomas Shepard in the United Kingdom in the MCU. Thomas is an adult in the series who has aged out of the foster care system. Ruaridh Mollica said this about Thomas in the series:

"We meet Thomas Shepard as a hurt young man. He's a grifter, he's a small-time thief, he's a bit of an artful dodger at the time, and he's lost in his life. He's looking for a purpose, and he ends up on the road with Vision. And that's probably all I can say for now."

Based on the latest VisionQuest clip, it seems that Thomas is dealing with the memories of what happened in Westview as he is either arrested or institutionalized. However, it appears that Vision, who is currently hiding in Edinburgh, may finally assist his son.

"Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including Friday, Edith, Jarvis, and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate."
