The idea of a Jack Ryan spin-off series focused on Domingo "Ding" Chavez once seemed likely. Fans of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan saw Michael Peña play Chavez in the fourth season of the Amazon Prime Video show. Many thought this was the start of a new show, just about his character. But that spin-off series has not happened, and Peña has shared his thoughts on why it never moved forward. He spoke about this in an interview with ScreenRant.

Peña was first introduced as Chavez in Jack Ryan season 4. Chavez is a well-known character in the Clancyverse, a former Navy SEAL turned CIA operative. The idea was that Amazon might build a new series around him. Some reports even suggested the spin-off would be called Rainbow Six. That name comes from the elite counter-terrorism unit in the books. But despite early talk, nothing has been officially confirmed or released so far.

In a recent interview, Peña said that the spin-off ran into problems behind the scenes. He said he thought the team would go into production earlier, but then things changed. Peña suggested that rights issues might have made it difficult. He also pointed to the shift of another Clancy adaptation, Tom Clancy's Without Remorse, from theaters to streaming. That move may have affected the plans for the spin-off. Peña described this as his "best guess" but admitted it was not confirmed.

Peña said that people were excited for the spin-off, but issues with rights and other details got in the way. He said he was "really surprised" that the spin-off did not happen, especially since his character was well-received by audiences. Still, he also looked on the bright side, noting that working on other projects like All Her Fault was a positive experience.

What did Peña say about the Jack Ryan spin-off plans?

As Jack Ryan Season 4 was airing, there was much talk regarding a potential spin-off series. Chavez's character played such an important role within the overall series; thus, fans wanted him to return with his own show following the ending of the original show. However, as indicated from Peña's comments, while fans are generally interested in a character's return, there are often many factors that determine if there will actually be a new series surrounding that character.

In addition, Peña has been very vocal about loving the character and wanting to continue developing further storylines. When recently questioned about the possible spin-off series, Peña stated he had no clue if it would happen and that it would be up to Amazon and the Clancy estate (the group responsible for administering the rights derived from the original books). Pena explained that multiple variables need to align for a new series to occur, like fan interest. He also stated that he couldn't give any information regarding the future of any projects.

Several reports indicate that at the same time Jack Ryan's fourth season came out, a Chavez spin-off was still uncertain. Several other media sources reported that Pena's character was received well, and that there wasn't an official proposal to move on with the spin-off. They also stated that Amazon has complete authority over the decision and that the spin-off is not firmly planned out.

The idea of the spin-off started from the expansion of the Clancyverse. Amazon initially created a theatrical release for Without Remorse, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was released as a streaming series. This change may have impacted how the entire Clancy franchise was developed in general, and specifically, if Chavez will have his own series.

The current state of the Jack Ryan Universe

Jack Ryan premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2018, with the show telling the story of CIA Intelligence Analyst Jack Ryan and his struggles with global crises. Season four was announced as the last season, airing in 2023. Afterwards, there was speculation of an expansion of the universe through additional series or films, but nothing has been officially established yet.

Many fans were hopeful that Chavez would receive his own series after he was portrayed positively throughout the novels and had an outstanding presence in season four, but Peña's comments indicate that this spin-off is currently not moving forward. Peña stated that the reasons for this may include issues with rights to the character, changes to the original plans for production, or other industry-related issues.

As of now, the Jack Ryan show has come to a conclusion with season four, and any attention appears to be directed to other projects located in this universe. One of these is the Rainbow Six movie, but its timeline remains uncertain. For now, fans of Chavez should not expect to see a separate TV series centered around his character in the near future, as understood by Peña's statements, although this idea may continue to hold some appeal for many fans of the show.
