Why Euphoria kept Fez alive after Angus Cloud’s death, according to Sam Levinson

It seems the Euphoria finale paid tribute to Angus Cloud, who plays Fezco O'Neill in the acclaimed HBO series. We see Fez in this season in a flashback moment from an earlier season, as Rue remembers her best friend during the last few moments of her life. It should be noted that in the show's continuity, Fez is alive, but he is serving prison time.

This is not surprising because Sam Levinson had explained the decision to keep Fezco alive off-screen despite Angus Cloud's tragic passing three years ago in July 2023. The Euphoria Season 3 premiere revealed that Fez is serving his thirty-year prison sentence.

How does Angus Cloud's Fez appear in the Euphoria finale?

Fez was an older-brother figure for Rue in the first two seasons, which is why she continues to look up to him even when he is serving a prison sentence in the third season. So, in the season 3 finale, Rue hallucinates that Fez had broken out of prison, making her rush to the convenience store where they first met. However, the place is abandoned and boarded up.

Following this, we see a touching scene from an earlier season of Euphoria featuring her and Fez, and following that, Rue breathes her last. Sam Levinson told Esquire that this scene was test footage that the production team had shot. This old footage helped the team to create something meaningful out of a moment that was never meant to be seen.

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson explained why he decided not to kill Fez live to Entertainment Weekly after the season 3 premiere:

“I fought very hard to keep him clean when he was alive, and losing him was really tough. I felt like if I couldn’t keep him alive in life, then, I could in the show.”

Now, after the finale, Levinson revealed that he is extremely fond of how Fez's storyline played out in this season:

“His arc this season is really kind of amazing, despite the fact that he's in prison and we don't see him.”

What's next for the HBO series?

As mentioned earlier, the season 3 finale was the last episode of the popular HBO series. HBO confirmed to Variety that the third season would be the show's final one this Sunday, and Levinson also confirmed it on Popcast, The New York Times podcast. However, this podcast episode was published only just hours after the finale aired on HBO.

The cast and crew of the series have been a bit mum before this week whether season 3 would be the HBO show's last. Colman Domingo famously told The Hollywood Reporter last month:

“[Sam Levinson] would always tell us, let’s treat each season as if it’s the last one. So he’s written every season as if it would be the last one, so you give your all. So, if it’s the end, I know that I gave it my all.”

Now, it seems that the cat is out of the bag and it is clear that the show has ended for good. Levinson justified the decision to end the show by saying that the HBO series was about addiction and its consequences. Given that Rue is the central character and she is no more, the show has concluded.
