House of the Dragon Season 3 is set to premiere next month on June 21, 2026, and will bring back several of our fan-favorite characters. One of them is Lady Mysaria, portrayed by Sonoya Mizuno.

Over the course of two seasons, Mysaria became one of the most important characters in Season 2. Known as the White Worm or the Mysery, Mysaria became a trusted confidante of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the fight for her rights as the heiress of the Iron Thrones. But why was she known as the White Worm? As pointed out by the Wiki of Westeros, Mysaria is described in the books as having "skin pale as milk", which might be one of the reasons.

However, fans of the show think otherwise, as the character looks different from how the book describes the white worm.

More on this in our story.

House of the Dragon: Why is Lady Mysaria known as the White Worm? Speculations explored

Lady Mysaria was introduced in HBO's House of the Dragon Season 1. While initially introduced as s*x worker, Mysaria also grew a network of spies within King's Landing, with which she protected herself and also aided Daemon. However, after Viserys' death and Hightower's taking over the control of King's Landing, she found her life to be in danger and fled.

She was then captured and brought to Dragonstone, where Daemon accuses her of helping Otto Hightower in usurping Rhaenyra's throne. While she apologised for any help she provided, she never begged for her life and stood her ground, which came in handy later.

In Season 2 of House of the Dragon, Lady Mysaria finally earned her place in Rhaenyra's trusted people after she saved her life from Arryk, who was sent to kill her. This resulted in Rhaenyra keeping Mysaria closer to her and even taking advice on how to deal with the rising war between the Blacks and the Greens. Not only Mysaria's advice but also her well-connected web of spies helped Rhaenyra a lot in the previous season.

As per the books, Mysari is also known as the White Worm due to her pale skin, which does not stand true with the HBO fantasy drama. However, Game of Thrones fans think that the HBO series found a subtle way to address why she was also known as the White Worm by dressing her up in a white cloak. One of the Reddit users addresses the claim with the example of the Blacks and the Greens and stated:

"She wears white. She’s lowly and has ears and eyes in the walls. The white worm."

The user further added:

"In a show where Rhaenyra is the Black Queen and Alicent is the Green Queen, and their allies are called Black and Green entirely because of the dresses they wear, I don’t think it’s odd that Mysaria’s nickname comes from the color she wears all the time."

Another Redditor agreed and wrote:

"Except there is a point to Mysaria's name. From her time as a common prostitute to twenty years later when she herself runs a network of spies, she's only wearing white dresses. Hence the White Worm title."

While the books do provide a reason for her being the White Worm, HBO's House of the Dragon did not provide a clear reason for her being called the same, and hence, it is only speculated that her white clothes are the reason.
