Ted Lasso Season 4 is gearing up for its Apple TV+ premiere this year. The fourth instalment brings a significant addition, recasting Ted's son, Henry, in the show. The cast for Season 4 will also see many familiar faces.
The characters who are returning are Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, and Brendan Hunt. There can be multiple reasons for a recast decision. For Henry, the prime reason is the narrative requirement.
In Season 4, Henry has evolved a lot, and this is why Turner was replaced.
Ted Lasso Season 4 recast Ted’s son, Henry
Usually, recasting decisions are pushed by many reasons, which include scheduling conflicts, character demands, and audience expectations. Recasting can raise questions for viewers.
The first season was widely hailed. It won 20 Primetime Emmy Nominations and is rated with 92% on Rotten Tomatoes for the debut season.

1. Narrative reason
The first reason steering the recasting decision for Ted Lasso is the demands of the role. Henry’s role has evolved within the story as the seasons progress. Season 4 is expected to deliver a more charged, active presence.
This shift is particularly needed as the plot opens in Kansas before moving back to London, where Henry joins Ted for part of the season. Grant may have been cast to reflect Henry’s growing importance in Ted’s day-to-day life.
2. Logistics of production
Production logistics may have affected the decision as well. Child actors have to stick to schedules because of their schooling requirements and travel regulations. Naturally, Season 4's filming requires the cast to travel significantly across the US and the UK.
This may have been one of the reasons to bring in Grant. International shoots without disrupting schedules are common priorities in production.
3. Timing as a steer for recast
Between the latest seasons, there is a significant time gap, which works as another motivation for the recast. The last Ted Lasso season came in 2023and the fourth chapter has just entered the production phase.
To a young actor, the challenge of grasping this time jump and the evolution of the character may create some challenges. This is especially true for a character who is now more evolved than the last time we saw him in Season 3.
4. Was performance a motivator?
There is no indication from the creative team yet that the recast decision stemmed from any performance-related reason. Gus Turner's performance was not talked about in this regard. Behind the scene conflicts with actors were also not heard.
Therefore, the change has not been framed as corrective, but rather as a natural development suited to production requirements. Now that Grant Feely walked into this season's ensemble, Ted Lasso appears poised to explore Ted’s relationship with his son in greater depth.
In the last chapter of the show, Ted was seen choosing fatherhood over football. It is expected that Season 4 will nod to that story, and it may also deal with the balancing act between coaching duties and other personal responsibilities.
