The upcoming Yellowstone sequel, created by CBS and Paramount, was being called Y: Marshals so far, and had kept fans quite excited about the same. However, the show's name has seen a subtle but impactful change very recently.

The show has dropped the letter 'Y' from the title and will simply be called Marshals moving forward.

While it is not uncommon for shows and movies to have a working title during production that is eventually changed before the launch, fans were curious about the reasoning behind the change in title.

Recently, actor Luke Grimes shed some light on the reasoning, and quite honestly, it is very logical:

"I think they just wanted to make sure people knew it was a 'Yellowstone' world, Taylor Sheridan world kind of a show. And it's clear once you see Kayce that it is that. So I think we could drop the 'Y' now."

In fact, his reasoning was also echoed by another CBS spokesperson when they were asked by The Hollywood Reporter, who mentioned that the title was always just a working title and the Y was always meant to be silent.

The 'Y' in Yellowstone spinoff Y: Marshals was always meant to be silent and just representative of the original show

As revealed to The Hollywood Reporter by a CBS spokesperson in January, the 'Y' in Y: Marshals was always meant to be a working title that would eventually be dropped before release. However, this does not mean that there is no reference to the original show in the upcoming spinoff.

Y: Marshals' updated title still has a stylized version of the Dutton family ranch behind the word Marshals. Therefore, the 'Y' is still very much a part of the show's title: It will simply remain as a silent factor in the title.

Aside from this reasoning, the show's actor, Luke Grimes, also mentioned that the Y in the title made it seem more like a question ("Why Marshals"), which could be confusing for fans. However, aside from this, keeping the letter Y in the title might also confuse fans about whether the show was actually a sequel to Y: The Last Man, a comic series that was produced for television by FX, before being cancelled after a single season.

The CBS show will follow the journey of the youngest Dutton, Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes). The events of Y: Marshals take place after the events of Yellowstone, where Kayce joins hands with a specialized U.S. Marshals team working in Montana.

Marshals will premiere on March 1, 2026, and will air on CBS, following which it will be available to stream on Paramount+.
