Widow's Bay episode Beach Reads was an experiment with Patricia before being a breakout hit

When Widow's Bay introduced “Beach Reads,” the episode may have looked like a lighter detour from the series’ usual mysteries and emotional drama. However, what initially felt like an experiment with Patricia’s character ultimately became one of the show’s most memorable and successful episodes.

Helmed by British actress Kate O'Flynn, who also received an Emmy nomination for her role as Patricia Moyer, Tom's eccentric assistant in Apple TV's comedy-horror series, Episode 4 allowed the writers to take a little detour from Tom Loftis' story and explore Patricia's story outside the familiar dynamics that defined her in the first three episodes.

While 'Beach Reads' could have easily passed as a filler episode, Kate O'Flynn managed to claim the entry as her own as Patricia, allowing the viewers a creepy peek into her character's life and history. While its tonal shift, unconventional structure and departure from the central mystery were creative risks for the writers, “Beach Reads” ultimately became one of Widow’s Bay’s standout episodes.

What has Kate O'Flynn said about Widow's Bay Episode 4 'Beach Reads'?

Fans anticipating a continuation of the central mystery in Widow's Bay Episode 4 were surprised to find an episode focused on Patricia, who was positioned as an important character in the series but largely remained in the shadows in the first three episodes.

Widow's Bay Episode 4 followed Patricia as she stumbled upon a mysterious self-help book in her mobile library's donation bin, which motivated her to throw a lavish Sunset Cocktails party to improve her social standing in the town. Additionally, Episode 4 was an important entry in the series, as it finally revealed the reason behind her social outcast status in the town. As it turned out, Patricia was resented by her former classmates for being the lone survivor of the local serial killer, The Boogeyman. While the serial killer managed to kill two girls, Patricia somehow escaped, which is why her story was largely believed to be a lie, making her a social pariah in her community.

In an interview with The A.V. Club, Kate O'Flynn opened up on the importance of Beach Reads and how it provided some much-needed answers about Patricia in Widow's Bay:

''They [creator Katie Dippold and Hiro Murai] had told me about an episode where you'll know what Patricia's deal is because in the first three, they're placing her right where you have to ask, "What's going on with her?" She's quieter and in the background, but when you see episode four and find out about her history, she starts to make sense. There's so much in it both emotionally and physically.''

What started as a fun party in Widow's Bay took a harrowing turn. Bechir woke Patricia from her trance and revealed that her self-help book was a grimoire, which not only made her serve her guests punch made with animal parts but pushed her to maniacal heights, involving a creepy headdress.

However, what began as a creepy experiment became a breakout hit for the show and Patricia, who finally abandoned her group of mean girls and found a family with Tom and Wyck. The final moments of 'Beach Reads' saw Patricia heading to the Church with Tom and Wyck in the latter's truck, resulting in an unlikely trio that banded together to protect the titular town from the ancient curse.

'Beach Reads' served as a reminder that not every successful story needs to follow the established formula. Sometimes, stepping away from the expected path can create the most memorable chapter.
