The HBO Max series, Hacks, has been widely lauded since its release, having received a rating of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also won Golden Globe and Emmy Awards. Essentially, such a highly enjoyable series is bound to make fans want more and more. Ever since the Season 5 renewal was announced, stans of the show have been counting days to its conclusion.

Therefore, Paul W. Downs, in his comment, acknowledged the show's loyal fan base. He mentions how people want the series to continue after Hacks Season 5. However, Downs' response is rather ambiguous, as it hinges on emotion.

We also realize by his statement that even if the creative decision could make sense, the cast and crew of the show are reluctant to bid their final goodbye to the show. Therefore, Downs does not really give a clear answer whether Hacks Season 5 is the final act.

Furthermore, co-creator Lucia Aniello talks about the series by stating:

“We pitched this show initially with the last scene in the pitch. Like, ‘It’s five seasons, this is what the last scene is.’ It is still the same, so for us, it’s something we’ve been building toward for a long time, so I really do hope people find the end of the season as satisfying as we do.”

Going by her comments, we understand that the last page of Deborah and Ava's story was something the makers had a good idea about. They were certain about how and at what point the show would conclude. So, basically, all the plotlines of the show throughout these seasons were shaped to meet at this endpoint.

Again, Aniello also does not explicitly state that Hacks Season 5 is the finale. Her comments lean more towards the coherence of the narrative and their vision. She is simply giving room to the story to take its own shape, rather than slapping a definitive label onto it.

Furthermore, Downs remarks in a light-hearted way about expanding the story into five seasons and a film, as he says:

“Five and a half at least?”

His playful comment hints that even if Hacks ends with its Season 5, the makers are not eliminating the possibility of expanding the story of Deborah Vance. Even in the form of a brand-new film, it could be done. If a movie actually takes place, it would be such a delightful treat for all the fans!

Conclusively, Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs' statements collectively indicate that Hacks Season 5 is designed in a way that will meet its closure. But at the same time, the makers do not make any concrete parting shots about the series. Although creatively it could make sense for the show to come to its end, they emphasize the emotional sentiment regarding the show's conclusion. The duo is certainly keeping all the windows open, even though they have a proper structural idea about its ending.
