The American actor and producer Tom Welling had been producing the animated revival of Smallville, but before the series gets its green light, ScreenRant's Andy Behbakht spoke with Michael Rosenbaum about the lasting impact of the show. The Lex Luthor star reportedly said that the show's revival plans might not fit James Gunn's DC 'equation.' Michael said,
"I'm not sure Smallville is part of that equation."
He then added,
"If we do something Smallville, now you're conflicting with the new thing and the past."
Michael confirmed the team had not discussed the project with James yet and noted that the original series creators Al Gough and Miles Millar had written a spectacular pitch. He added that when the right time comes, it will happen. Michael revealed that James and his team already had their own plans, and so he was not sure whether the series would fit into that vision or not.

Smallville updates: Michael Rosenbaum opened up about the lasting impact of the animated series

While discussing the lasting impact of Smallville with ScreenRant's Andy Behbakht, Michael said that the creators might not want to complicate matters while developing this new world of Superman and everything connected to it. He added that in their view, introducing something like the animated series would create conflicts between the new storyline and the past legacy. Michael mentioned,
"I'm not sure that while doing and creating this new world of Superman and Supergirl and all these things, they want to complicate things. Maybe in their minds, if we do something Smallville, now you're conflicting with the new thing and the past. I'm not sure."
Michael also said that he would prefer not to comment directly but felt that James and his creative team had already made a plan from before and mapped out a vision. From his perspective, the animated series doesn't seem to be a part of James Gunn's DC equation because they are thinking completely outside the box and focusing on shaping a new world. Michael stated,
"Right now - I won't say anything, but - I feel like James and that world, they have all their ideas of what they're doing, and I'm not sure Smallville is part of that equation."
Previously, Nicholas Hoult played Lex Luthor in James Gunn's DCU. On December 12, 2023, ScreenRant revealed the reason behind James Gunn's decision not to cast Michael Rosenbaum in Superman: Legacy.
Why did James Gunn not choose Michael Rosenbaum to play Superman: Legacy?
As per ScreenRant, James Gunn explained that Michael was perfectly fit for Lex in Smallville. James wanted a fresh interpretation of the character who can align with the tone and direction of his new DC universe. Therefore, he decided to cast Hoult, who fulfilled James' character vision.
James explained that he envisioned a Lex whose age and experience aligned with this Superman's, choosing Nicholas Hoult alongside David Corenswet to match that vision. This made the two characters feel more like equals and helped explain why Hoult got the role.
