At last, a frustrated Adams stands up to Amelia and the pressure of the Shepherd legacy.Adams realizes he wants to pursue neurosurgery in Grey's Anatomy Season 23The pressure of the Shepherd legacy has been a recurring theme in Grey's Anatomy. Dr. Derek Shepherd was a world-class neurosurgeon, and three of his four sisters were established and successful as doctors as well. Thus, Amelia (played by Caterina Scorsone) felt that she had to live up to the expectations of the family. She famously called herself the black sheep of the family for quite some time because almost everyone in the Shepherd family underestimated her. However, now, Amelia has exceeded expectations and become a world-class neurosurgeon herself, no longer just known for who her brother was. Lucas Adams (played by Niko Terho), Amelia's nephew, now faces the same pressures of the Shepherd family's legacy that Amelia once did.In Grey's Anatomy Season 23, episode 3, we see the residents of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital try to figure out what research programme they will apply for. View this post on Instagram Instagram PostIn Grey's Anatomy Season 23, episode 3, we see Adams on Amelia's service as they treat a patient who is facing an extradural meningioma that requires an emergency resection. Amelia observes Adams as he tries to perform a procedure during the surgery, but she keeps telling him what to do instead of just letting him do it.Adams tells her once that he knows what he's doing, but Amelia's presence is overbearing. She keeps questioning whether Adams is sure of what to do next. When Adams is faced with a complication, Amelia gives him a few chances to figure out a solution. But when he cannot find one soon, Amelia takes over the procedure entirely.Adams thus feels embarrassed because not only did Amelia have to take over the procedure, but it all happened in front of an intern. Towards the end of Grey's Anatomy Season 23, episode 3, after the surgery is completed, Amelia tells Adams to not beat himself up for one complication he couldn't solve. Adams responds by saying:"You set me up to fail."Amelia tells him that she let him try and didn't expect him to get it right on his first try. Adams says that he feels like she has no expectations from him regarding anything, including becoming a neurosurgeon. Amelia responds to that by saying:"The people who have what it takes to pursue neuro don't keep their options open. They zero in. They think about it every minute of the day. Derek did. I did. You're not—"She is cut off by Adams, who then says:"Because I'm not you. Or him. And maybe, I don't want to be, okay? My way isn't wrong or defective just because it's different from yours."He then tells her that for someone who claims she was the underdog growing up, Amelia's actions are contradictory. He tells her:"You sure like to tear people down."He then walks away. Later, at the end of Grey's Anatomy Season 23 episode 3, Amelia approaches Adams as he's heading home and apologizes. She tells him that while she still gets treated like she can't get anything right, he doesn't deserve the same. Amelia adds that she does think Adams can become an excellent neurosurgeon and asks him to work in her lab.Adams says he'll think about it, then says he's going to move out of the apartment he shares with her before leaving. Besides leaning towards neurology, Adams moving out marks another step towards a new beginning for him. What's next for Grey's Anatomy Season 23?Jo comes into the hospital in Grey's Anatomy Season 23, episode 3, to hand in her badge and quit her job.
