This was a great week for Beyond the Gates, highlighted by the interview with Gayle King and Anita Dupree (Tamara Tunie). We had Tomas (Alex Alegria) turn down Kat’s (Colby Natasha Nixon) suggestion that they move in together as well. The reason I really liked this scene was that, normally, we see Tomas always trying to placate Kat, as if the fear of saying no to a “Dupree woman” is just too much.

But there was a good reason; he wasn’t just being petty or spiteful. Tomas heard from Kat that she had nowhere else to go and was going to be homeless (slight exaggeration), and Tomas saw it as him just being her last choice, and that didn’t feel too good. She got a bit...Katty lol, but Tomas assured her he was doing it as an act of love, stopping them from taking the step they were not ready for. Bravo to these two for the scene.

Scene Of The Week: Tamara Tunie as Anita Dupree

If there was a single, undeniable high point this week, it was when Anita bared her soul to the nation on prime time TV. Tamara Tunie gave us a lesson in com posure and using all the many facets of acting to deliver her lines, the message that hits beyond the soap and into every home. Tunie made sure that every female watching and every man that loves and supports that woman was intimately aware of how anyone can have their lifes trajectory changed by Cancer, but early detection is key. And the way that Tunie gave us that version of Anita and managed to deliver such an important message is why she is the "Performer of the Week."

By not heading down the usual soap opera tropes, she offered us a woman desperately clinging to her dignity.

This was Anita Dupree, stripped back to the parts of her that are hidden away from the world and Fairmont Crest.

There was this quite poignant and heartbreaking moment when Tunie’s voice caught, just a barely noticeable tremor while discussing her family, only for her to instantly reclaim her composure with the grace she is famous for. That choice alone gave the segment with Gayle King a raw sense of urgency. Tunie grounded a storyline that, in lesser hands, might have spiraled into melodrama.

Yet, the week couldn't end on a soulful note alone. As we closed out the week, Kat is ready to go toe to toe with Leslie Thomas again. Can she gather the evidence and actually have it admissable in court or is this an act of futility? Leslie it would seem is far too smart for the "Kit Kat Brat."

See you next week, Gates fans.
