Let’s be honest: usually, the first week of January is where storylines go to die while the writers recover from the holiday cliffhangers. Not this week. The episodes airing January 5–9, 2026, gave us the kind of emotional whiplash that reminds us why we watch this show. We had medical dread, illicit hotel romps, and jazz funerals for the living.

Hands down, the "Gold Star" goes to Tuesday’s showdown between Tracy and Anita. We’ve spent decades watching Anita Dupree play the stoic matriarch, the woman who fixes everyone else’s mess while barely wrinkling her blazer. Seeing Tracy weaponize that poise against her? Brilliance.

Tracy knew exactly what she was doing. She didn’t offer a shoulder to cry on; she poked the bear with reverse psychology until the bear bit back. When Anita finally hurled that teacup across the parlor, it wasn’t just good drama; it was necessary catharsis. The scream—"I want it all!"—was visceral. It stripped away the "Lady of the Manor" facade and left us with a terrified woman staring down her own mortality. It takes a lot to make Vernon the calm one in the room, but they pulled it off.

Best of the Week: Fat Tuesday on a Thursday

While Tuesday brought the pain, Thursday brought the soul. The impromptu "Fat Tuesday" party was the week’s undisputed champion. "Cancer stories" in daytime usually involve a lot of hushed tones and beige hospital waiting rooms. The writers flipped the script.

Watching the Duprees execute a second line through the mansion was visually stunning, but the subtext did the heavy lifting. The juxtaposition of the joyous music against the looming reality of Anita’s Friday chemotherapy created a bittersweet tension that felt earned, not manipulated.

Look, I can’t ignore the train wreck that is Leslie and Marcel. While the Duprees were crying over blood work, these two were "working late" at the hotel. It’s trashy, it’s messy, and with the clinic evidence looming, it’s going to blow up spectacularly. I can't wait.

But ultimately, this week belonged to Anita. If she goes down, she’s clearly going down swinging—and dancing.
