On Beyond the Gates, Jacob and Smitty were in such hushed conversation at Orphey Gene's about the structure of the blood plasma ring that the on-duty June noticed. The detective and the reporter were shocked when June deduced that they were probably talking about The Impaler. Once June left, Smitty went over his notes: Ren, the man who had agreed to meet with Jacob, was a “mid-level mafioso,” but there was no information on The Impaler himself, nor any specific details about how the plasma was actually procured.

Smitty listened as Jacob presented his own research: similar syndicates used mobile labs and paid the poor and downtrodden to supply them with plasma. Jacob agreed with Smitty that they were better off focusing on collection rather than distribution going forward. Once Jacob departed to meet with Ren, Smitty asked June if, when she was living on the streets, she had ever tried to sell plasma. June admitted she had attempted it, but only to a clinic who wanted a definite address and required a questionnaire that would have given away her drug use.

When June heard about the mobile collection trucks, she realized that Smitty was indeed investigating The Impaler and warned him that the streets would eat him alive – plus, bad things happened there to nosy people looking into what wasn't their business.

Ren found Jacob in an alley, impressed that he was early. Jacob effected a street tough persona and tried not to show his surprise that Max hadn't actually gotten him entry into the ring. Ren wanted to be sure first that Jacob understood the process of picking up and delivering “the product” without anyone seeing him. Moreover, Ren wanted to put Jacob to a loyalty test – he tasked Jacob with “motivating” an associate who was making noise about wanting more money. Jacob accepted the challenge but looked concerned once he was alone.

Jacob met back up with Smitty, who didn't like that Jacob had agreed to Ren's test. When Smitty asked Jacob how far he was willing to go, he replied, “Far enough to prove myself.”

At Garland Memorial, Naomi told Ashley about a lawsuit she had handled in which a care facility had been neglectful of a patient. Ashley said that it helped when a family knew about someone's health issues, which forced Naomi into confessing that she hadn't told anyone except Ashley about testing positive for the BRCA gene variant. Naomi refused to lay the news on her relatives when they were already dealing with so much and assured Ashley that she had support in the genetics counselor, the other doctors she had spoken to – and of course Ashley herself.

The best friends were interrupted by the chaotic arrival of Lynette, who ushered a bruised Hayley in. Ashley ran off to make arrangements for Hayley's care, and, when Hayley talked about failing to do what she and Naomi had learned in self-defense classes, Naomi insisted that things weren't Hayley's fault...though she wondered if Lynette had hurt her hand trying to help Hayley.

Questioned how she knew Hayley, Lynette explained that she was a client at the firm where Hayley worked. Naomi announced that Bill Hamilton was her father and her father-in-law was the chief of police; she immediately put in a call to Elon as Lynette worked to maintain her façade. Then, Naomi visited Hayley, feeling terrible that his father's wife had been assaulted. She took Hayley's hand in comfort and declared that, whether she liked it or not, they were family. Hayley smiled before fretting that she hadn't been able to reach Bill – not knowing he had sent her call to voice mail.

Pamela and Andre were on pins and needles waiting to hear if Dani was going to accept Tatum's modeling offer. Dani hemmed and hawed – on purpose, looking to get a reaction out of her ride-or-die and her husband. “Make the deal!” Dani finally exclaimed. Pamela exited to do just that, leaving Dani to suggest that she and Andre do another one of their “private photo shoots” to keep her in practice. Just as Dani rushed upstairs excitedly, Bill showed up on the door. “Oh, hell naw,” Andre said.

Andre gave Bill directions to Chelsea's studio, but Bill demanded that the photographer get out of his way. Dani heard the kerfuffle and discovered Bill in her home, learning from him that their daughter was engaged. Bill was annoyed that Dani wasn't upset about it, but Dani's joy was muted when he added that Chelsea was intent on joining Madison in Denmark.

Bill was adamant that Chelsea not throw away her dreams for Madison the way Dani had for him – but before he could continue, he got the call that Hayley had been mugged. He rushed out, begging Dani not to let Chelsea make the same mistakes they had.

Madison arrived at the Dupree mansion anxious to talk to Chelsea, who was gushing about their engagement and plans for Copenhagen. Madison's attempt to speak was further blocked by Vernon and Anita, who entered the living room; Anita revealed that she was feeling good now that she was several days past her chemo treatment...and the matriarch noticed that Madison was covering her left hand.

Chelsea nearly burst before sharing that she and Madison were going to be married. “That is not a ring – that is a billboard!” Anita beamed as she took in the diamond on Madison's hand. As Chelsea and Anita enthused about wedding dates and locales, Madison suddenly erupted that she wasn't moving to Denmark after all. She had turned down the fellowship.

After the Duprees left them alone, Madison concurred with Chelsea that the research project had been a dream of hers, but she had also long held the dream of having a spouse and a home like her friends had. “When you don't see yourself reflected in society,” Madison pointed out, “you think certain traditions aren't for you.” Therefore, Madison had poured herself into medicine – but now she had the “loud, romantic, reckless” Chelsea, and she didn't want them to spend a year apart. Chelsea hated the idea of Madison giving up the fellowship; Madison countered that she'd have only been distracted thinking of Chelsea anyway.

Chelsea and Madison proceeded to Dani and Andre's home, where they were told that Bill had already been there to fink about the couple's eventual move to Denmark. They corrected that Madison had chosen to stay in town, but the Richardson-Duprees still thought that the Hamilton-Montgomerys' engagement was good enough reason to break out the champagne. Afterwards, Andre griped to Dani that Bill had used Chelsea's betrothal as an excuse to see his ex. Dani reiterated that she had set a boundary with Bill; Andre urged Dani not to let Bill take her off course now that she had her modeling career back.

Hayley allowed Elon to interrogate her, informing the chief that she had gone to meet Lynette to deliver some papers regarding her case – and that a stranger had come out of nowhere and attacked her. Simultaneously, Lynette told a similar story to an unnamed officer, adding that Hayley had talked at length about how wonderful Bill was. The scammers each corroborated the “fact” that Lynette had come and scared the criminal away.

Bill rushed into Hayley's room, and she cried that she'd thought she was about to be killed. The “mugger” had dropped her phone, but made away with her purse and all her jewelry. When Bill lit into Elon about what the police should be doing to catch the hoodlum who had ambushed his wife, Hayley looked impressed. Outside, Lynette could barely hide her disgust as Ashley fussed over her.

Elon advised Naomi to keep her wits about her, especially with Jacob gone so much on assignment. Naomi laughed that Jacob had kept her stocked with pepper spray and other deterrents, though Elon invited Naomi to keep company at the Hawthorne home, especially since Darlene would be delighted to see her daughter-in-law.

As the Hamiltons made their way to the elevator, Hayley asked why she hadn't been able to get a hold of Bill. The lawyer lied that he had been handling a delicate matter but felt bad that he hadn't been there to protect Hayley, who sobbed that the mugger had taken her engagement ring. Bill resolved to replace it with something big enough to prove to everyone that she was his wife. Hayley melted into Bill's arms, pleased but wincing from the welt that Lynette had left.

Back at the diner, June found Lynette staring at Hayley's ring, cautioning her not to lose it, as a friend of hers once had her own. Lynette determined that she wasn't going to let the ring slip through her fingers.
