On Beyond the Gates, Kat popped in on Smitty and Martin, jokingly offering to go on the vacation to Costa Rica that Smitty had had to turn down. Smitty reported that the story he was working on prevented him from making the trip, while Martin commented that he himself had made the mistake of putting his ambition – and secrets – first; now he had rearranged his priorities. Samantha rushed in, panicked that she hadn't yet begun work on her AP Psych project. Martin assumed that his daughter was juggling too much between the cotillion, ChelseaKat and the clinic, but Samantha confessed that the real reason for her lack of focus was her worry about Anita. At Samantha's request, Martin called to check on her.

Dani and Nicole were both worried to have received a summons from Anita. As Vernon took Martin's phone call, Anita sat her daughters down and explained that, after her dizzy spell at the country club had sparked rumors, she had decided to go public about battling cancer. The Dupree sisters learned that Anita was set to tape an interview with Gayle King that very day. Meanwhile, Martin relayed the same news, which he had gotten from Vernon, to his husband, sister, and daughter. Kat thought that Anita coming forward was an excellent way to control the narrative, while Smitty felt it was a way to turn pain into power.

Samantha wanted to join her elders to see Anita off, as she and Vernon were about to fly to New York for the interview. Smitty said he had to stay behind; privately, he told Martin that it was because he was heavy into his investigation. Martin hoped it would be worth letting his family slide.

After they got to the Dupree manse, Martin continued his conversation with Samantha about overextending herself, with Nicole standing by him. When Samantha said that neither of them had slowed down following Anita's diagnosis, Nicole supposed that they probably should. Martin decided to let Samantha continue moving between projects but announced that he had called her teacher to get her an extension on her assignment.

Naomi, glum because she hadn't heard from Jacob, ran into Lynette at Orphey Gene's and reported that Hayley was doing as well as she could recovering from her mugging. After Naomi left, Lynette found Randy and told him that she had taken care of everything – but before she could get into details, Joey arrived for a meeting with Randy, so Lynette said she would send him a text. With Lynette gone, Joey came down on Randy for not being out looking for Hayley's attacker; Randy lied that he had been interviewing Lynette, since she had been the one to save Hayley in the first place.

At the law firm, Bill heard from Elon, who relayed that Hayley's assailant had been caught. The police chief elaborated that 911 had received a call from a woman reporting an attack from a homeless man in Stance Park – when officers arrived, they found Hayley's wallet in his coat pocket. Hayley did her best not to show her confusion in front of Bill and insisted that she go to the station to identify the man by herself, as part of taking her autonomy back.

Bill shared the news of the arrest with Joey, who then left a message with Marcel, asking him to double-check it. Meanwhile, Hayley met with Randy at Uptown, assuming that he had set up the vagrant. Randy deduced that it had been Lynette's handiwork and warned Hayley that Lynette would be demanding a favor in return. He then showed Hayley the text he had received from Lynette, which included a photo of the “mugger”; Hayley needed to know who she'd be “identifying” for the cops. Hayley felt bad for framing an innocent man, but Randy said it was too late to turn back.

Hayley acted relieved for Elon's benefit after she singled out the man. After they concluded their business, Hayley was distressed to see Lynette, who said she had been brought in to corroborate the man's identity. When Lynette griped that Hayley being able to leave the hotel probably meant she'd be without her accommodation as well, Hayley flashed back to Randy's warning and offered to pay for Lynette's continued stay personally. However, Lynette knew she was facing prison time in the embezzlement case and demanded that Hayley get Bill to do something about it.

Randy returned to Orphey Gene's, where Joey proclaimed that Randy was off the hook – Marcel had verified that an arrest had been made in Hayley's case. But when Joey went on that the man's name was Wesley Hammer, June overheard and said it wasn't possible that Wesley had been Hayley's assailant. She knew Wesley from the streets and was absolutely certain that it wasn't in his personality to be violent – the cops had nabbed the wrong man. Randy tried not to react.

The undercover Jacob met with Ren in an alley, receiving a monetary bonus for taking care of the “point man” who had been demanding to be paid more. Jacob was eager for his first assignment, but Ren needed to make a call about it first; afterwards, Ren tasked Jacob with his first pick-up and reminded him to ignore everything he was about see and hear – and to not talk to anyone about either.

Afterwards, Jacob was surprised to see a dressed-down Smitty, who was relieved to hear that Jacob had given the point man a stern warning instead of beating him up. Smitty took notes on his phone as Jacob described seeing a warehouse – and Angelo, the man he had interacted with there. The men then parted, with Smitty on his way to follow up on the information he had just been given.

Chelsea arrived at Bill's office to take him to lunch, smiling that she knew Bill had been the one to make the donation that had made it possible for Madison to stay in town and still do her Parkinson's research. Bill wouldn't take credit for getting a branch of the Danish facility opened locally, but Chelsea knew he had done it for her. Before they could leave for their meal, Chelsea got a text from Dani asking her to come to the Dupree mansion.

Anita sat across from Gayle King at the New York studio, with Vernon observing from the wings. As instructed, the entire family back in D.C. were listening to the taping to substantiate what was being said in case they were questioned once the segment aired. Anita spoke of how she had neglected to get a mammogram and had only gone in after Laura, who had been working with her on WinterFest, had pressed her to do so.

Gayle listened as Anita admitted that she had triple negative breast cancer, and as she went on to explain more about that particular malignancy. Naomi nearly squirmed when her grandmother mentioned the BRCA gene variant. Telling Gayle about the port she'd had installed and the several rounds of chemo she had endured thus far, Anita added that she would have had a far less chance of surviving had she not gone in to be screened; Mrs. Dupree faced the camera and implored the audience to have their own tests done. Once the taping concluded, Gayle lauded Anita's courage and was positive that she and her team would be hearing from women who had undergone mammograms because of Anita's example.

Back in the DMV, Naomi got a quick text on her burner phone from Jacob with the simple message “miss you.” She smiled, but when she walked into the foyer, she happened upon Dani, who was thanking Bill for helping Chelsea and Madison...and noting that “the whole BRCA thing” had “knocked her flat,” which gave Naomi pause. Concurrently, Hayley returned to the law firm and overheard Bill telling Dani “I got you.”

Following the episode, Gayle King and Tamara Tunie (Anita) featured in a PSA telling viewers that 85% of those diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. They emphasized the importance of early detection and guided people to knowyourlemons.org so they could make a screening plan.

Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus.
